100% clean energy target set by Michigan lawmakers after negotiations |
After a series of changes: Michigan lawmakers gave final legislative approval just past midnight Thursday to landmark bills requiring carbon-emitting energy sources be phased out over the next two decades.
Along party lines, the House sent the “Clean Energy Future” package – Senate Bills 271, 273 and 502 – toward Gov. Gretchen Whitmer. The bills dramatically shift energy production and use to green sources, transitioning away from ones that produce climate-warming greenhouse gases. Another change:The Michigan House of Representatives voted to strip local municipalities of standard zoning approval over large wind and solar projects in a controversial move that’s part of a larger effort to push the state’s energy systems toward carbon-free power sources. More in politics:Michigan’s minimum wage will increase in 2024 from $10.10 to $10.33 an hour, the state Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity announced Friday, Nov. 3. |

Why Michigan police, fire officials with ties to ‘hate groups’ could lose their jobs |
Under House Bill 5281 and 5282:Members of Michigan’s police and fire departments could find themselves out of a job if credibly found to have ties to known hate groups, should a pair of bills introduced in the state House last week become law. Also in Lansing: Efforts to change a person’s name or gender identification in Michigan may soon get much easier, and less costly, under legislation introduced in the state House this week. In business: About 200 people have been laid off at Pfizer’s facility in Portage. The laid-off employees were notified on Thursday, Nov. 2, citing a low demand for its COVID-19 products. |

Alberta Clippers and Saskatchewan Screamers: Why they impact weather in Michigan |
As we head into late fall and winter, weather patterns are going to shift as the large-scale flow of the atmosphere changes with the seasons. This shift brings with it different types of low-pressure systems that impact the Great Lakes region, and this includes weather systems known as Alberta Clippers and Saskatchewan Screamers. Once they enter a region, they don’t stick around long and they don’t bring much precipitation. This is because the air mass that makes up these systems is quite dry in comparison to other low-pressure systems, so they don’t have much moisture to work with to create rain or snow. October's rain amounts: Large areas of Michigan had a lot more rain than usual last month. When you look at exact amounts, some of the rain tallies were staggering. |
