Communities throughout Michigan are gearing up to celebrate and honor Memorial Day. Whether it's a parade, flag ceremony or fireworks show, here is a list of events happening across the state. Plan on traveling? We have good news! Michigan plans to lift some road closures to ease Memorial Day traffic. Personally, I'm ecstatic U.S. 131 in Grand Rapids is set to reopen before the weekend. Michigan’s Adventure is opening its doors for the season to the public this weekend. Free admission will be available to military members and discounted admission online for friends and family of military members through May 27. |

The latest U.S. Census American Community Survey data shows mostly good news for Michigan, as the estimated population for “places” (cities, townships and villages) is on the rise in many parts of the state. The state as a whole increased in population by 3,980 people from 2022 to 2023, up to 10,037,261 residents. Find our searchable database here. Cracking down: Airbnb’s anti-party system is in effect for the Memorial Day and Fourth of July weekends. It was previously in effect on Halloween and New Years and blocked thousands of reservations. Approximately 1,000 users were deterred from booking a Michigan listing over the Memorial Day and Fourth of July weekends in 2023. In politics: Once a boogeyman of the left, nuclear energy has made significant inroads with centrist Democrats attracted to its mix of economic potential, labor and climate bonafides. |

Will a Northern Michigan mineral deposit worth billions still be mined? |
Moving forward: A decade-long effort to tap into a rich mineral deposit buried 8,000 feet deep in Northern Michigan is still ongoing, but progress has been slow. Michigan Potash & Salt Company says its $1.2 billion mine is in a pre-construction phase – 12 years after geologists rediscovered the state’s vast trove of potash, or potassium chloride, and two years since Michigan backed the project with grant dollars. Decline in gaming payments: For the second straight year, Michigan’s tribal casinos reported a slight decrease in payments to local governments. Michigan’s tribal casinos are required to pay 2 percent of total winnings to local state government bodies or revenue sharing boards. A very lucky player: A winning ticket was sold for the Lotto 47 drawing Wednesday night that is now the largest prize ever won through the Michigan lottery website. The winning ticket matched all six numbers drawn -- 2-24-26-40-41-44 -- to win a $7.19 million jackpot. |

Why does thunder sound so different at times? Loud and fast or long, rolling rumbles |
An explanation: Why was the thunder earlier this week so loud and long? There are two valid reasons. The first reason for a different sounding thunder is the actual amount of lightning in the thunderstorm. The next reason has to do with atmospheric temperatures. To know: The warmer than normal air temperatures are boosting most of the Great Lakes’ water temperatures. While the southern Great Lakes are really heating up, Lake Superior remains amazingly cold. Be aware: Michigan residents may notice low flying helicopters in their communities in the coming weeks. Here's why. |

Lions will have joint practices with Giants, but Chiefs stick to guns and pass |
Denied: Dan Campbell wanted to get a second joint practice on the books during training camp and the preseason. But that’s not how Andy Reid and the Kansas City Chiefs roll, so the Lions will have only one set of joint sessions this year, with the New York Giants. Most improved: Jameson Williams has oozed superstar potential since the day he first walked into the building on one good knee, although injuries and a suspension slowed his development. No longer held back by those factors, that development is starting to come. With his latest win, Ozan Baris advances to the tournament semifinals, becoming the first Michigan State men’s tennis player to advance that far in the NCAA Tournament in program history. |

Ann Arbor is the best place to live in Michigan, latest U.S. News rankings say |
On top: Ann Arbor is the best city to live in Michigan, and one of the top 20 places to live in the country, according to U.S. News and World Report. The report ranked the city No. 19 in the United States. According to the Michigan Department of Transportation: A major U.S. 23 overhaul project in the works for Ann Arbor’s east side won’t include a freeway expansion, an option previously under consideration. It's back: Seven months after announcing the supply of the popular Bumpy Cake was dwindling, Sanders announced this week that the beloved dessert is set to return to shelves in the coming weeks. |
