State lawmakers had a busy day Wednesday, with Flint water settlement, college athletes and more With just days left until the end of the current session, Michigan lawmakers made the most of their time Wednesday, taking up a number of noteworthy votes on issues of broad interest. There was action on the Flint water settlement, paid endorsements for Michigan college athletes, the extension of virtual meetings for local governments and more. Here are links to stories on the numerous actions taken yesterday inside the Michigan Capitol: ►$600 million Flint water settlement bills pass Michigan House Should those who are pregnant get vaccinated against COVID-19? Now that Americans are receiving the COVID-19 vaccine, some questions have started popping up about who should get the vaccination. One questions that has come up surrounds currently pregnant individuals. Should they get the new vaccine? Officials say more data is needed to determine the vaccine's risk for people who are pregnant or breastfeeding. But, currently, health experts say there isn’t any known increased risk from the vaccine, when compared to non-pregnant individuals. Then the trendlines went in opposite directions. 97% of Michigan businesses applying for $15K COVID-19 grants will be turned away On Tuesday morning, Michigan small business owners anxiously waited for the clock to strike 9 a.m. When it did, they worked their fastest to submit applications for $15,000 COVID-19 relief grants being handed out by the state. Unfortunately, only about 666 grants will be handed out, but thousands of business owners applied for the funds. In total, 22,350 businesses attempted to apply for the grant money during the 12 hours the site was open. That means about 97% of those businesses will be turned away. It was certainly exciting for University of Michigan football fans when Donovan Edwards, the state's final top 50 recruit to commit, announced he would be a Wolverine. But the excitement should be spread out, according to Michigan State's Mel Tucker, who reminded fans the Spartans aren't done building for 2021. With all the announcements that came in yesterday, though, it makes sense for some to be excited about what next year brings. The female reindeer recently visited the roughly 50 residents at Vineyard Assisted Living in Texas Township, with help from Carol Borton of Reindeer Ranch. Residents were able to pet and take photos with Percy, who is among the 18 reindeer that live on the ranch. Borton said assisted living homes are popular stops for her reindeer during the holiday season.
