Let's end this week on an uplifting note. |
We have finally made it to Friday! Hopefully you're feeling a surge of good energy as we head into the weekend. Let's take a look at a few stories that could continue to lift your mood. Saginaw teen Avery M. Smith's dream of playing volleyball again is becoming reality once she was medically cleared this week to return to the courts after a devastating 2022 car crash. In Wayne County, a new canine advocate named Jellybean comforts anxious victims and witnesses during court. |

Virtually anyone can be a sheriff in Michigan. That may change soon. |
Not as lenient: To be sheriff in Michigan, a person needs just two things: To be a qualified elector in the county where they’re seeking the job, and then to win an election. A new bill would require sheriff hopefuls to have served as a licensed law enforcement officer or corrections officer for at least five years. Speaking of law enforcement: A woman is facing charges after attempting to hit deputies with a vehicle during a traffic stop and then fleeing at speeds of more than 100 mph through two Northern Michigan counties, police said. Behind bars: A Jackson man who was convicted of killing his girlfriend, nearly beheading her in the act, will remain in prison for the rest of his life after the Michigan Supreme Court declined to hear his appeal. |

Michigan heading into rainy stretch, 30-degree temperature drop |
Cooling down: The end to the warm weather is approaching, bringing rain, especially in Lower Michigan as we end the week. Temperatures are also going to drop considerably by the weekend for all of us. Chilly: A cold front will linger over Northern Michigan and the Upper Peninsula the next several days, sending low temperatures tumbling into the mid-30s and 40s. Here's a look at the weekend forecast for our two regions Up North. Not a weed: Michigan lawmakers are weighing legislation to protect milkweed, a native plant essential to insects like monarch butterflies. It would exempt milkweed anywhere in the state from being considered a noxious weed, which local municipalities are legally responsible to destroy. |

Lions-Panthers predictions: Detroit expected to win the NFC feline battle |
Game day: For the fourth consecutive week in this NFL season, the Detroit Lions are clear favorites, expected to win Sunday’s game by at least nine points when they host the winless Carolina Panthers at Ford Field – and for good reason. Basketball landmark: The Detroit Pistons, in collaboration with Belfor, a Michigan-based disaster recovery company, are embarking on a transformative renovation project for the historic St. Cecilia’s Gym. Absent: Mel Tucker won’t be in attendance for the Michigan State hearing on his sexual harassment case this week due to a “serious medical condition," according to a letter sent to Michigan State’s president and Board of Trustees. |

Historic Michigan library’s chilling ‘ghost tours’ are so popular there’s already a waitlist |
Ghostly: Shadowy figures lurking on the stairs, books moving on shelves, computers turning on unexpectedly — these are some of the seemingly “paranormal” activities reported at one of Michigan’s historic libraries in Saginaw. Take a drive: The iconic Tunnel of Trees in Northern Michigan is perfect for a scenic drive. The gems tucked along this 22-mile stretch of M-119 between Harbor Springs and Cross Village means it’s sure to see plenty of traffic this year. Get dressed: The U.P. is the birthplace of Plaidurday, the “worldwide celebration of plaid” and Houghton is hoping to bring the record home at 12:45 p.m. Friday, Oct. 6, at the at the Houghton High School football field. |
