Why was Ann Arbor's city administrator fired? We looked through 1,500 pages of emails for answers Back in February, the Ann Arbor City Council voted to fire City Administrator Howard Lazarus. Since then, no one has been willing to discuss the reason for the termination. Council members say they are barred from discussing Lazarus because of a non-disparagement agreement and the city has refused to release his last performance evaluation. MLive sent Freedom of Information Act requests to obtain 1,500 pages of emails that might shed some light on the situation. They do provide some insight on tension between the board and the former administrator. The emails also show an outcry from community members who were upset over Lazurus' termination. Gretchen Whitmer released a statement Monday voicing support for a ban on the use of chokeholds by police. Whitmer also expressed support for increased accountability measures for law enforcement in the state, such as independent investigations for all shootings and use of force cases that result in the death of unarmed civilians. The recommendations, if adopted, would help ensure the safety of Black Michiganders, the statement said.
