Great Lakes beach cleanups took a hit during the summer of coronavirus The beach has been a popular destination for Michiganders this summer. With many indoor facilities closed and big events canceled due to the coronavirus, state residents really utilized the beaches on the Great Lakes as a space for relaxation and recreation. At the same time, COVID-19 made group volunteering a less-common occurrence, and that includes volunteer efforts to clean up the beaches. Additionally, budget cuts connected to the virus have impacted staffing levels at some beaches and new rules have lessened staff ability to maintain cleanliness. With more visitors and fewer resources, it has led to a messy situation on the shores of the Great Lakes this year. Benson explained that voters can expect to wait longer than usual for election results from November's general election. She said the state should prepare for "Election Week" instead of "Election Day," due to the back-ups expected by clerks across the state. Why is this year different? Internet sales tax a financial win for state government during pandemic Late last year, before anyone knew the financial impact COVID-19 would have on Michigan, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signed into law a group of bills that made it easier to collect sales tax from a broader number of online transactions. When Michiganders buy goods from online retailers like Amazon or Etsy, the state is taking its cut in the form of a 6% sales tax. It doesn't matter where the seller is located -- as long as the buyer is in Michigan, the state profits. In a rough financial year, the tax has become one of the state's healthiest revenue streams. It has been a rollercoaster leading up to this delayed season. Student athletes thought fall football was out of the question, until a recent change that allowed gyms to reopen led the Michigan High School Athletic Association to reinstate the season. Now, it will be a truncated season, with teams starting games on Sept. 18, taking on their original week 4 opponents. This will definitely be a high school football season like we've never seen before.
