What to expect from weather this week |
Today is warmer as many spots approach 80 degrees. Wednesday has the chilly northeast wind dropping temperatures. Thursday morning could have light frost in the eastern half of Lower Michigan. We won’t have any rain across Michigan until a cold front arrives Friday over the U.P. and western Lower Michigan. The total rainfall forecast shows Friday and Saturday should have some sizable rain in wide swaths across Michigan. lf you're planning on gardening this week, we have a Garden Talk for you. Did you know your yard may have hot and cold microclimates? |

Will Michigan be the next state to ban LGBTQ conversion therapy for minors? |
Background: Conversion therapy is the practice of trying to force a person, sometimes physically, to change their gender or sexual identity. It’s also perfectly legal in the state of Michigan, bar a few cities that have independently enacted banning ordinances. Some data: Statistics from The Trevor Project, a nonprofit dedicated to LGBTQ suicide prevention, estimate that 10% of Michigan’s LGBT youth have reported being threatened with the possibility of conversion therapy as of 2022. Another 5% reported they’d already been subjected to it. Those numbers are part of why Luke Londo, a member of the LGBTQ community himself, is pushing hard for the state to rectify that. As part of his role on the Civil Rights Commission, he introduced a resolution supporting a ban on the practice of conversion therapy for minors in Michigan. |

4 charged in Muskegon teen’s shooting death, but no homicide charge issued |
Four people are facing charges for their alleged involvement in a shooting that left a Muskegon teenager dead and uncertainties still lingering in the case. One question that remains unanswered is: Who shot and killed 14-year-old Demario Spears Jr.? In Berrien County: A body was found in the St. Joseph River, likely the body of a missing mother. A manhunt ends: Police say the suspect wanted in connection with the death of 29-year-old Patrice Wilson, turned himself in. Wilson was kidnapped from outside the Detroit Medical Center Saturday and was later found dead in her vehicle outside of an apartment in Novi. |

A big change is coming to free throws in high school basketball |
The one-and-one is done: High school basketball is doing away with the bonus and going to a double bonus and free throws will now be determined by how many fouls a team had picked up each quarter, not each half. Close to home: Willie Mack III of Grand Blanc won a local qualifier and will now advance to the final stage of U.S. Open qualifying. On the big network: Michigan State draws primetime kickoff vs. Ohio State and Michigan State vs. Arizona basketball is officially set for Thanksgiving following the Lions vs. Packers game. |

Angelo’s Restaurant to close as University of Michigan plans $4.5M purchase |
By December, Ann Arbor eaters will no longer be able to enjoy the deep-fried French raisin toast or sandwiches at Angelo’s Restaurant. Owner Stephen Vangelatos confirmed the planned sale and that the restaurant will close its doors in December after 67 years. Remaining closed: The Michigan DNR said Monday that the River Trail at Tahquamenon Falls State Park will be closed until at least May 26 due to reports of missing walkways, downed trees and underwater platforms.
Let's end with some cuteness: Check out this video of newborn twin fawns in a Lansing backyard captured by Aaron Leonard. |
