Celebrating Black History Month across Michigan |
February marks the national recognition of Black History Month, a time to celebrate the culture, history, ingenuity and the innumerable contributions Black people have made to America. Head to Saginaw Valley State University to see sculptures of the late Harlem Renaissance artist Richmond Barthé or visit Flint to learn about the unique challenges of African American genealogical research. Biden meets with UAW members, Black faith leaders during Michigan visit |
Visiting: President Joe Biden met with members of the United Auto Workers union Thursday in Warren, emphasizing to a room of roughly 100 individuals the power of the middle class and laborers. Before heading to the UAW union hall to give his remarks, Biden stopped met with Black faith leaders in Harper Woods. He then traveled to a UAW training site near a General Motors campus in Warren. Protesters were waiting for Biden at the campus to call for a ceasefire in the ongoing Israel-Hamas war. Fundraising: Underscoring Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s aspirations on the national political stage, her Fight Like Hell political action committee reported raising more than $1.8M million in the final six months of 2022. |

Michigan approves Tesla supplier’s nickel exploration lease |
The Michigan Department of Natural Resources approved a mineral lease for Talon Metals to explore for nickel deposits under 23,000 acres in Baraga, Houghton, Iron and Marquette counties. Talon is drilling near the nation’s only existing nickel mine, Lundin Mining Company’s Eagle Mine northwest of Marquette. Oily: Federal regulators say they recovered more than 3,000 gallons of oil and counting after it escaped a Saginaw County truck yard. U.S. Environmental Protection Agency officials say the oil is linked “without a doubt” to an adjacent trucking company named C&J Bark Haulers. Also in the environment: New research from the University of Michigan discovered fruits and vegetables grown in urban gardens have a carbon footprint six times greater than conventionally grown produce. |

Michigan’s weekend weather: Wow, late March-like with a very welcomed guest |
Slightly warmer: There's no rain or snow in store for Michigan this weekend, according to the forecast. Afternoon temperatures should warm to around 40 degrees for most of Lower Michigan on Saturday. There's one more thing that makes our weekend weather beautiful: the sun will be out. Pocket full of sunshine: There’s a lot of joy to be found in this weekend’s forecast for the upper regions of the Lower Peninsula and the U.P. The sun will be out in full force and daytime highs could reach 45 degrees. Beyond the weekend: The NOAA long-range forecasters just released the new February forecast. The first half of the month is expected to have very warm, dry weather. That's expected to change around mid-February from a much warmer than normal pattern to a near-normal or slightly colder than normal pattern. |

Mother of Michigan school shooter reminds jury her son is human |
On the stand: Victims referred to Michigan school shooter Ethan Crumbley as a “waste,” “a creature” or refused to say his name, but his mother, Jennifer Crumbley, told jurors he’s human as she took the witness stand in her own defense on Thursday, Feb. 1. Also in court: A self-styled conservative activist will represent himself in court during a trial for allegedly kicking a fellow Republican in his crotch while disrupting a Michigan Republican committee in a Clare hotel. In the first day of the jury trial in the case against Michael Christopher Butler, prosecutors introduced evidence of the 911 call and emotional testimony from the woman who found the body of a 16-month-old boy in a ditch. |
