Black Americans are buying more guns while navigating 'landmines of white supremacy' Americans purchased a record number of guns last year as the country was rocked by the COVID-19 pandemic, mass demonstrations against police brutality and domestic terror attacks. In Michigan, the FBI performed 1 million firearm-related background checks in 2020, more than twice as many from the previous year and an 84% increase from the former record in 2016. While all kinds of Americans are stocking up on guns and ammunition, people of color are becoming a larger share of first-time gun owners. Surveys conducted by the National Shooting Sports Foundation estimated gun sales among Black Americans saw the biggest increase of any demographic category from 2019-2020, rising by 58%. MORE See how many working families in your county aren't paid enough to cover basic necessities Many of Michigan’s essential workers were already struggling to cover costs of living prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, according to a new report, and officials fear the coronavirus has only put them in a more vulnerable position. A new report from the Michigan Association of United Ways on Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed, or ALICE households found 38% of Michigan households struggled to make ends meet, up from 32% in 2007, just prior to the Great Recession. Take a look at the numbers in your Michigan county: MORE Kris Maddox was pleased to see signs of growth from his Montague High School wrestling team this season. All Maddox had to do during an all-girls wrestling quad in the Wildcats’ gym was look beyond the mats and into the stands. Fans held homemade signs reading “Autumn,” “Emma,” “Natalie,” “Presley” and “Savannah.” Those are the names of the five girls on Montague’s 23-member squad. They signal growth not only in Maddox’s program, but in the sport. While participation numbers have leveled off a bit this season because of the coronavirus pandemic, the overall trend shows girls wrestling continuing to grow in Michigan. COVID-19 vaccine distribution began Tuesday at Ford Field in Detroit. The site has a goal of administering 6,000 doses per day, seven days a week for the next eight weeks. The mass vaccination site is being managed by the state of Michigan with support from FEMA, Wayne County, the city of Detroit, Ford Field, Meijer, Henry Ford Health System, the Detroit Lions and the Protect Michigan Commission.
