'I just want to hug my mom:' Visitation ban takes emotional toll on nursing-home residents, families For more than three months, visitors have been banned from Michigan's long-term care facilities because of the coronavirus crisis. While Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has eased the policy a little for dying and critically ill residents, the visitation ban for most was extended through July 15. The continued separation is taking a toll on people like Stacy Doubrava, whose parents live in a nursing home west of Owosso. “It’s hard not to touch, hard not to hug,” Doubrava says. “It’s heartbreaking.” For residents suffering from cognitive impairment, it is difficult to explain the changes. For those who do understand, its still upsetting. But the visitation restrictions are all in the name of public health.
