In today's newsletter, Michigan kids could get free meals under a budget proposal from Gov. Whitmer, a basketball player's rare diagnosis leads his team to dedicate a game to tumor research and how to apply for a summer job on Mackinac Island. |
Let's brag about Michigan for a moment. |
Michigan is grand. It's known for being surrounded by our beloved freshwater Great Lakes. We have Motown and the Upper Peninsula and fudge! And we are also known for the uber-talented Jack White. As you might have read recently, The White Stripes popped up on the list of nominees for the Rock N' Roll Hall of Fame this year. Mr. White was also on a couple episodes of "American Pickers." And what's next for Jack? He'll be "LIVE FROM NEW YORK" on "Saturday Night Live" Feb. 25. Another bragworthy fact about Michigan — none of our many beaches were listed among the deadliest in the country. OK, maybe that's not worth a brag. But it's good news, right? |

A Sudden Stratospheric Warming is becoming likely. It could send us slipping back into winter.
|
A warm-up could bring the cold: The top of our atmosphere is about to warm dramatically. The warm-up (some areas will flirt with 60 degrees) usually sends a cold blob of air eventually into the eastern half of the U.S. and the Great Lakes region.
Mark explains a 'Sudden Stratospheric Warming': When the stratosphere warms dramatically over the course of a few days, it ripples an influence down into the weather atmosphere, called the troposphere. Think of it as someone jumping on an old school waterbed. You jumped on the bed and waves traveled across the bed. Read more from our chief meteorologist here. Earthquake near Lake Erie:A small earthquake rumbled through western New York early Monday, alarming people in a region unaccustomed to such shaking but apparently causing no significant damage. |

It's been closed for 12 years. Now this 90-year-old bridge near Ann Arbor is finally being removed. |
Closed for a dozen years: The bridge across Mill Creek between Guenther and Dancer roads, some seven miles west of Ann Arbor city limits, closed in 2011 after a regular inspection revealed extensive structural deterioration, making it unsafe, officials said. Finally coming down: The structure is being removed because of its condition and the duration of the closure, under an agreement between the road commission and the Michigan Department of Transportation. There are no plans to replace the bridge. More Washtenaw County news: He had a 'heart of gold': Longtime Washtenaw County orchard owner was dedicated to farming |

A basketball player's rare diagnosis sparks his team to dedicate a game to tumor research. |
Playing for awareness: A West Michigan high school basketball team is rallying behind a teammate who was diagnosed with a rare tumor disease that currently has no cure. Senior Gabe Aughdahl was diagnosed two years ago with a desmoid tumor in his neck. To support their teammate, the West Catholic boys and girls basketball teams are both dedicating their Feb. 17 games to raising awareness and support for desmoid tumor research. Desmoid tumors are rare. For every one million people worldwide, only two to four are diagnosed per year.
More in sports:Will former Detroit Tigers pitcher Justin Verlander join Jack Morris in the Hall of Fame. Here's what Morris had to say. |
