Planning a Michigan summer vacation?

For someone who has lived in Michigan their whole life, there's a lot of things people would consider a Michigan-must that I've never done.

A few examples: Seeing Tahquamenon Falls, visiting the Soo Locks, kayaking at Pictured Rocks, and hiking through Porcupine Mountains. Needless to say, I have some ideas for traveling this summer.

DNR shares Great Lakes summer safety tips for beaches and swimming.

Be cautious: The Michigan Department of Natural Resources is reminding summer travelers that despite the Great Lakes’ appeal and beauty, they are large, powerful water systems that require certain safety precautions.

The danger: Rip currents, adverse weather patterns and crashing waves are just a few of the potential threats at beaches, piers and breakwalls. These can be deadly.

With another $9.5M in ads, Michigan plans to ‘keep trying’ to boost COVID vaccinations

Vaccines are slowing down: Vaccine uptake has advanced at a crawl since late last summer, but the state still believes more holdout residents can be convinced to get a shot.

More ads to come: After spending more than $77.6 million in state and federal funds for its vaccine advertising campaign in 2021 and the first quarter of 2022, Michigan has earmarked another $9.5 million for the months April through June.

State of COVID: Despite a rise in new COVID cases and test positivity, Michigan remains in the post-surge phase of the pandemic cycle, according to state officials. The number of Michigan counties where CDC says people should mask dropped from 22 to 14.

Dozens of cats were lost in tornado debris. One Gaylord woman is rescuing them.

Missing kitties: Susan Forcier has rescued dozens of cats in the days after a tornado ripped through Nottingham Forest Mobile Home Park.

Her background: As the founder of Tip of the Mitt Lost Pets Facebook group, Forcier has recovered dogs, cats, horses, goats, potbelly pigs and even a peacock across Otsego County. Over the past seven years, the all-volunteer organization spearheaded by Forcier has located over 1,000 missing animals.

Not an easy task: The Gaylord mobile home park was hit hardest by tornado. The 150-mph tornado left behind a huge trail of splintered wood, shredded insulation and piles of debris.

Red Wings legend Vladimir Konstantinov soon may lose 24/7 care

The backstory: Detroit Red Wings star Vladimir Konstantinov suffered severe brain damage in a limo crash in the late 1990's. Since then, the now 55-year-old has needed round-the-clock medical care.

Why?: Along with about 18,000 other Michigan residents with severe traffic-related injuries, Konstantinov has lost his state-funded, unlimited lifetime medical care due to changes in Michigan's auto insurance law.

Memorial Day recognized all across Michigan.

‘We tell their stories’: Great Lakes National Cemetery was able to finally host its special Memorial Day Ceremony after being canceled for the past few due to the pandemic.

Local events: Ann Arbor, Kalamazoo, Grand Rapids, and several other areas had Memorial Day parades bringing in hundreds of community members.

A thank you: Volunteers from all over Michigan played a part when preparing for Memorial Day activities. Whether it was placing flags, planning parades or donating to charities who help veterans, it all makes a difference. To those who have served or are currently serving, thank you for your service. To those who have fallen, may they never be forgotten.
