Lansing's Cotton-top tamarin family welcomes fifth litter

Michigan's Cotton-top tamarin family keeps getting bigger as they welcome a new addition.

The baby born to parents Yuri and LG at Lansing’s Potter Park Zoo on June 9 marks the fifth successful litter for the pair in the past five years. The baby’s arrival brings the cotton-top tamarin family group to a total of eight members.

The older siblings have eagerly taken on the task of caring for the infant, who will gradually gain independence by five months of age, according to zoo staff.

EF-1 tornado struck near Michigan village, authorities confirm

Severe storm: An EF-1 tornado was on the ground for nearly three miles near Colon, southeast of Kalamazoo, late Wednesday, authorities confirmed.

Storm chaser Ryan Harriott found what he was looking for Wednesday night. Starting east of Three Rivers, Harriott said he saw a funnel cloud and he drove east with the storm, reaching the village of Colon on the evening of Wednesday, July 12. The National Weather Service deemed the funnel as a “possible tornado” on social media.

Record breaking rain: The rainfall maps show the total rainfall at all locations across Michigan that received rain. Some places even set record daily rain totals.

Michigan company’s ‘first ever’ over-the-counter birth control pill approved by FDA

Coming soon: Opill, a progestin-only daily oral contraceptive, is created by Perrigo, a generic pharmaceutical and self-care company whose North American corporate headquarters is in downtown Grand Rapids. The drug will be available online and at retailers across the U.S. in the first quarter of 2024, Perrigo said in a news release.

Second chance: The Michigan Civil Service Commission voted unanimously Wednesday, July 12, to partially lift a longstanding ban on hiring state employees who fail preemployment drug screens for marijuana.

Studio 8 Salon: A Traverse City-based hair salon is now under investigation for potentially violating the city’s non-discrimination ordinance after its owner posted to Facebook earlier this week it would not serve transgender customers.

Up North weekend forecast has showers, thunderstorms in the mix

Storms and sunshine: This weekend will see a shift in our weather pattern for Northern Michigan, with rounds of showers and thunderstorms in the forecast. A mix of sun and clouds will filter through the area this weekend, with mostly clear skies by Sunday.

Beach and boating: This is a great time of year to hit the beaches of Michigan or head out on the water. A few water conditions are excellent, and a few weather conditions will make for somewhat marginal boating conditions this weekend.

As destructive as a tornado: A microburst packing 100 mph winds uprooted trees and damaged homes in the Upper Peninsula earlier this week.

NBA implements in-game flopping penalty, expanded use of Coach’s Challenge

Airbnb has unveiled its most hospitable Michigan host for 2023. Michigan’s “Holy Waters Hideout,” a log home on the Au Sable River owned by Jeanne and Chad, claimed the top spot according to an annual report released this week.
