Dine al fresco this summer |
Now that we've officially hit summer, it's the perfect time to soak up the sun while grabbing a tasty meal outdoors. Dine on authentic Tuscan dishes at Palio Del Sole's rooftop patio in Ann Arbor. For a bit of fun while grabbing a bite to eat, check out Sam Hill in Scio Township. The restaurant has plenty of outdoor seating with games like cornhole and bocce ball. If you're searching for a variety of ice cream flavors to help cool off, fill up a cone (or waffle bowl!) at one of Jackson's most historic restaurants. The Parlour recently reopened under new ownership and serves as a great place to enjoy a family meal under $20. |

Explore a rare, 25,000-year-old cave near Lake Michigan |
A different adventure: At a place called Bear Cave in Southwest Michigan, you can explore Great Lakes history underground. Buchanan is home to Michigan’s only public cave systems. Bear Cave is a naturally forming cavern on the St. Joseph River, a watershed of Lake Michigan. The cave is on private property as part of the Thousand Trails Bear Cave RV Resort and is about 15 miles from the lakeshore. Its walls are 18-feet thick and made of tufa limestone. The cave was formed more than 25,000 years ago via glacial drifts on Lake Michigan, according to the resort. Getting outdoors: Looking at the sky through binoculars on a clear, dark night can significantly expand what’s visible, revealing details otherwise impossible to see with the naked eye. Here's how to best use your binoculars on your next summer stargazing adventure. |

Michigan’s first electric school buses had a bumpy start. What went wrong? |
Wheels on the bus: Replacing some of its oldest diesel-guzzling school buses with eco-friendly electric vehicles was an appealing opportunity for Ann Arbor Public Schools. What they got fell short of expectations. Some of the buses needed repairs, broke down while students were onboard and the initial charging technology failed to deliver what it promised. Ann Arbor was one of seven districts in the state selected to pilot the electric buses. Also in education: Concordia University Ann Arbor will transition a large number of its academic programs to online-only learning after the next school year in an effort to cut costs. Speaking of transportation: There are plenty of road construction projects that may affect traffic flow this week. At least 88 new closures are scheduled to begin this week, according to the Michigan Department of Transportation |

Neighborhood was known for its 100-year-old trees. Until a tornado wiped out hundreds. |
Aftermath: The Colony Woods neighborhood sustained a direct impact from the strongest tornado to hit Kalamazoo county since the 1980s on May 7. Weeks later, residents of the town are still grappling with downed trees, insurance claims and some are facing upwards of $40,000 in bills from tree removal services. Up North: A survey team for the National Weather Service has confirmed a weak tornado touched down in Gladwin County during severe storms on Saturday. No injuries were reported. The tornado’s strength was rated as an EF-1, with an estimated peak wind speed of 90 mph. Forecast: After last week’s heat wave and high humidity finished with weekend storms, another chance for severe weather is setting up for Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service. |

Fallen officer: An Oakland County sheriff’s deputy was pursuing a stolen vehicle when he was fatally shot in an ambush Saturday night, said Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard. The deputy killed was identified as Bradley J. Reckling. Visitation: Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson has announced plans to re-introduce in-person contact visits with inmates at the Genesee County Jail three months after being targeted by a lawsuit. Giving back: A 22-year-old man accused of intentionally injuring two elderly pedestrians in a hit-and-run crash earlier this month now faces additional charges. |

The most clever and outrageous totems we saw at Electric Forest 2024 |
Totems have been popular at festivals for years, but many have banned the creative pieces because they can block the audience’s view of the stage. That’s not the case at Electric Forest, the popular music festival that draws people from all over the country to rural West Michigan. Here are the most clever and outrageous totems we saw at this year's festival. Artsy: A festival described as a unique blend of fine art, specialty crafts, artisan food, street performers, and handcrafted goods is returning to the Lake Michigan shoreline. The Lakeshore Art Festival returns this month from June 29-30, featuring over 280 exhibitors throughout the streets and parks of downtown Muskegon. Museum visit: Learn more about the symbolic and cultural significances of jewelry at Meditations in Gold: South Asian Jewelry, a new exhibit at the Flint Institute of Arts. |
