Food and housing prices remain high as annual inflation drops to 6% |
Prices ticked up in February as annual inflation continued to drop. U.S. consumer prices increased 6% in a year, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported Tuesday, March 14, which is the lowest inflation rate since September 2021. Monthly costs went up 0.4% in February after a 0.5% jump in January. Where you see it: Inflation, running hot for the past year, has been noticeable for most consumers in food costs. Grocery prices have gone up 10.2% in a year following a 0.3% rise in February – a sign that food inflation is starting to slow down.
Speaking of cash: More than $159 million in Great Lakes projects is included in President Joe Biden’s proposed budget, including a study that would identify coastal areas vulnerable to flooding and find ways to shore them up. |

Michigan’s ‘right to work’ is at death’s door. What will its legacy be? |
On the out: Whether “right-to-work” kept the promises of its proponents — wealthier workers, more business — or sowed the damage its harshest critics feared — lower wages, devastated unions — remains a hotly-debated question. Potential refund: State government would use taxpayers dollars to reimburse some union members the full cost of their dues under legislation introduced in the House last week to establish a refundable tax credit for those costs. Also in Lansing: Democratic lawmakers are considering increasing penalties associated with abuse of red flag laws, as punitive use of the measure is a point of major concern in the overall conversation on gun violence. The change could make a first-time misuse of extreme risk protection orders a four-year felony rather than a misdemeanor. |

Warmer winters bring earlier end to bear hibernation, what to do if you see one |
Good morning: Sleeping Bear Dunes' bear population soon won't be sleeping anymore, so officials are offering tips to avoid potential encounters like making your presence known, give the bear plenty of space, and detour quickly.
Michigan wildlife regulators set the number of black bear hunting tags for the next two years – an overall decrease in available licenses. A state wildlife biologist explained the overall goals are to increase U.P. bear numbers but at a slower rate, and to slow down and stabilize the species’ population growth in Lower Michigan. It's almost time for this too: We are getting closer to when we can plant indoor-grown vegetable transplants into our gardens. Here are some tips to have those transplants big and healthy before the final planting. |
