Free at-home COVID tests and masks arrived too late, experts say The U.S. Postal Service started mailing free at-home rapid antigen tests to people who requested them in January. Some did not receive the tests until February, or later. Boxes of respirator masks, provided for free by the federal government, arrived at stores around Michigan in late January or early February. But by Feb. 16, Michigan relaxed its mitigation recommendations, rescinding its mask mandate and saying the worst of the omicron surge had subsided. So, did the federal interventions come too late? University of Michigan researchers partnered with Ford to study carbon emissions over the life of both electric vehicles and internal-combustion engines across the United States. They found switching to EVs for light-duty pickups, sedans and SUVs can reduce emissions by nearly two-thirds.The research showed the bigger the vehicles swapped for EVs, the greater the overall emissions reductions. Global Michigan brands like General Motors, Ford, Little Caesars, Dow Chemical and Kellogg’s are all part of an exodus of at least 400 companies that have withdrawn from Russia in recent weeks.
