In today's newsletter, we cover trick-or-treat times around the state, Michigan and Michigan State's post-game meltdown, state politics round-up and places to experience fall foliage color before winter hits. |
It's Monday and Halloween. What could be scarier? |
Can you count how many times you've heard "spooky season" this month? Neither can I. The scary festivities will reach its peak this evening as Halloween is officially here. Streams of trick-or-treaters will soon be knocking at your door, hoping to fill up those orange pumpkin buckets. We've rounded up trick-or-treat times and family-friendly activities for cities across Michigan in today's newsletter (there's still a few hours left to buy fun-sized candy bars!). The Halloween spirit doesn't have to burn out along with your jack-o-lantern's candle. Check out the first-ever “Flint Short Film Freakout” on Nov. 12 to watch horror films from around the world. If that's not frightening enough, swipe through photos of the Detroit Lion's Week 8 loss against the Miami Dolphins. Before we get into it, we have a guest appearance in today's Morning Briefing. Gillian Van Stratt will walk us through the ugliness that went down in Ann Arbor on Saturday night. OK, let's dive into it. |

Get ready, Michigan. Trick-or-treaters will be knocking soon. |
All treats, no tricks: Ghouls, goblins, and other costumed characters hunting neighborhoods across Michigan for candy today to celebrate Halloween. Stay on top of trick-or-treating times in your area: Ann Arbor, Mid-Michigan, Grand Rapids, Flint, Kalamazoo, Muskegon, and Jackson. Halloween for Tiny Humans: Even the tiniest humans are getting into the Halloween spirit thanks to staff at the Corewell Health Helen DeVos Children's Hospital. Over 200 costumes were crafted this year for babies in the NICU (neonatal intensive care unit). There's even a set of twins dressed as a cheeseburger and fries combo. Washtenaw Witches: Those identifying as pagan or Wiccan make up fewer than 1% of adults in Michigan, according to a study by Pew Research. Despite the small population, witchcraft practitioners are coming "out of the broom closet" and finding community in Ypsilanti and across the state. |

Does the Michigan-Michigan State rivalry need a little time off? |
Just plain ugly: Michigan vs. Michigan State has been a heated rivalry as long as most of us can remember. It's gotten ugly before. Punches have happened before. But what happened Saturday night in Ann Arbor after Michigan's 29-7 win (which we'll dissect below) was just gross. If you've been a part of this rivalry for most of your life, ask yourself this: Are we still enjoying ourselves? How many days of the year does this game feel good? Even the postgame elation - when your team wins - leads to miserable water cooler bragging and constant posturing on social media. The disdain for one another, in our year 2022, is palpable and this rivalry no longer feels like a weekend this state can look forward to. What happened after the game: When the game ended, things immediately got feisty on the field. The teams were obviously exchanging taunts and gestures. As Michigan State players exited the field, Michigan defensive back Ja’Den McBurrows can be seen leaving the rest of the Wolverines players and skipping himself into the middle of the mass of Spartans headed into the tunnel. A strange choice to be sure. The next thing we know, as documented here by our reporter, multiple MSU players are attacking, punching and kicking McBurrows. We don't yet know what happened in between these two videos, and more is being released as of the writing of this newsletter, but it doesn't matter. Violence is inexcusable. Here's what Michigan's AD had to say. Here's what Harbaugh said. Here's Mel Tucker's response. Here's what was said nationally. As of late Sunday night, Mel Tucker had suspended four Spartans players.
There was a game before all that: There actually was a football game before all that disgustingness. MSU gave its fans hope the way it played in the first quarter, but the second half ended those dreams. Jake Moody is the 🐐. And the undefeated Wolverines have red zone offense at the top of their short list of areas to improve. |
