Whitmer calls for bipartisan COVID-19, economic progress in State of the State address Gov. Gretchen Whitmer on Wednesday night delivered her third annual State of the State address, honing in on her plan to aid the state’s economic recovery while getting COVID-19 under control, and she asked the Legislature for help. “Based on the political environment this past year, you might think Republicans and Democrats in Lansing can’t find much common ground on anything. But the reality is, despite all these crises, and the gridlock in Washington, we took real bipartisan action to get things done for you and your family,” Whitmer said, addressing Michiganders directly from her capitol office, instead of the traditional venue in the House Chambers. Here it is: MORE NEWSMichigan sending hazard paychecks to teachers, $250 to school staff by Feb. 25 Hazard pay checks to teachers and school staff that worked through the pandemic will be sent by the end of February, according to an update by the Michigan Department of Treasury. The “MI Classroom Heroes Grants” would send $500 bonus payments to teachers and $250 checks to staff by Feb. 25 per the update. The Legislature and Gov. Gretchen Whitmer struck a state budget deal last October that set aside $53 million in hazard pay for teachers and $20 million for support staff.
