High COVID transmission counties double in Michigan, furthering need to mask up Michigan started the week with 17 counties with COVID-19 transmission rates considered “high” according to the CDC’s four-level evaluation system. In a matter of days, that count has jumped to 39. Residents in those counties are recommended to wear masks indoors, even if they’re vaccinated against COVID-19, due to the high rates of infectious illness. The same is true for another 30 counties with transmission rates deemed “substantial.” In total, 69 of the state’s 83 counties are within the top-two risk levels for coronavirus spread. Masking isn’t being mandated for those areas, but federal health officials say it’s important to take steps to prevent further spread of the nation’s dominant coronavirus strain, the delta variant. Attorney General Dana Nessel is reissuing consumer alerts to remind Michiganders to look out for scams. “Unfortunately, bad actors look at storm cleanup as an opportunity to take advantage of victims who are desperate to repair damage right away,” Nessel said. “I continue to urge Michiganders to do their research before making any decisions that will impact your home or business.” READ MORE New data from the 2020 U.S. Census shows Michigan’s largest city continued a seven-decade trend of losing residents. Detroit’s population decline has been evident in every census since the city’s peak in 1950, when 1.8 million people lived there. Detroit was home to 639,111 residents in 2020, according to new data released Thursday, a 10.5% decrease since the last count was taken in 2010. Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan said he believes the Census undercounted the city’s population “by at least 10%” in a statement.
