Morning Briefing

THURSDAY, JANUARY 11, 2024

In today's newsletter, Winter Storm Watch hoisted for 53 counties, true crime film on Kalamazoo serial killer hits theaters and sharing fun winter activities.

It might be a wild, wild-card game

Things are ramping up for the Detroit Lions-Los Angeles Rams prime-time wild-card game, including ticket costs. TickPick claims this game is the most expensive get-in price in the history of the NFL’s wild-card round at $571.

The matchup is full of juicy storylines. One of the most prominent being the return of quarterback Matthew Stafford to Detroit. Apparently he isn't welcome in all of Detroit, as one bar banned fans from wearing his jersey on Sunday night.

Now I know it's too early for Super Bowl talk, but I have to tell you that if you donate blood, you could win a trip to the big game.

True crime film on Kalamazoo serial killer hits theaters

A thriller full of Kalamazoo connections is showing at just 25 theaters across the U.S. this week, but on Friday, Jan. 12, “He Went That Way” will be available on streaming services, including Apple TV and Amazon Prime.

In the film, Jacob Elordi stars as Bobby Falls, a 19-year-old killer based on Kalamazoo-born serial killer Larry Ranes. The story follows celebrity animal trainer Dave Pitts’ real-life account of picking up Ranes as a hitchhiker on Routh 66 in 1964. Pitts was the sole survivor of Ranes.

In the wild: A trail cam caught footage of a cougar taking down it's prey in Toivola, Michigan in the Upper Peninsula.

Michigan State football needs to find a new home opponent for 2024 season

What happened: Louisiana announced it replaced a previously scheduled Sept. 14 game in East Lansing by playing at Wake Forest on Sept. 28. That creates a hole on the schedule for the Spartans.

For the Wolverines: Michigan's attention to detail was evident throughout their 15-0 season, culminating in Monday’s national championship victory. This is how small details, like shoe placement, helped them win it all.

In the NFL: Sam LaPorta is trending in the right direction, and even participated in a walk-through as Detroit began preparations for the Rams.
