It's almost tulip time🌷

Flower lovers will soon flock to Holland during the first weeks of May for the famed Tulip Time Festival. More than six million tulips are getting ready to bloom across the city and there's a convenient way to watch them grow from the comfort of your home.

The city has set up a livestream camera pointed as tulips sprout in Centennial Park. The Tulip Tracker includes a timelapse option to look back over the weeks to see growth as well.

Speaking of sprouts, April is a great time to plant the season's first vegetables. Check out a few garden to-do's for the month with help from Michigan State University Extension’s Smart Gardening planner.

Solar eclipse of the heart: Michigan couple weds atop castle during celestial phenomenon

Tying the knot: Vanessa Quigly and Anthony Badall of Stockbridge made Monday’s solar eclipse into something even more special, exchanging vows atop the Helmer Castle tower at the peak of the event. The medieval-style castle is located in Jackson County.

The eclipse: According to NASA, the Jackson area saw just shy of 98% of the sun’s light blocked by the moon at its peak. Only the very southeastern corner of the state – including the city of Luna Pier – experienced the nighttime-like darkness of totality.

In the skies: The Beaver Island State Wildlife Research Area was recently certified as Michigan’s first and only international dark sky sanctuary.

Michigan could make kindergarten mandatory. Homeschooling parents worry a registry is next.

Education: Michigan doesn't currently require children to attend kindergarten but a proposed bill could change that. The legislation would require children to enroll in kindergarten at age 5, instead of 6, beginning in the 2025-26 school year. Home-school advocates say the changes would impact their freedom to choose how - and when - they decide to begin educating their children.

Creative kids: Students at Myers Elementary School in Grand Blanc donned their sunglasses to watch Monday's solar eclipse. From "it looks like a banana" to "it looks like a half eaten cookie," check out how the students described what they saw in the sky.

Time to learn: Washtenaw Community College has started its “Free College Week” with virtual classes available at no cost through Friday, April 12. Classes are open to the general public to register.
