Getting ready to observe Lent |
After having our share of indulgent treats this week (looking at you, paczkis), many people are observing the Lenten season that lasts until Easter. For those unfamiliar Lent, here's a guide to what the fasting period entails and the meaning behind yesterday's Ash Wednesday. We've also rounded up a list of traditional Friday fish fries in the Jackson County area. If you're not abstaining from red meat, try one of these five places in Muskegon to grab a tasty meatloaf meal or visit Ann Arbor for a juicy cheeseburger at Casey’s Tavern. |

Open water: Ice cover on Great Lakes drops to historic winter low |
Thin ice: On Monday, Feb. 12, average ice cover across the entire Great Lakes dropped below 3 percent — a record low for February that comes amid an El Niño winter of mild snowfall and temperatures. Parts of Michigan even hit 60 degrees last week. Input needed: Silver Lake State Park is entering its next decade of management plans and wants to know what the public wants to see from the state park. Speaking of lakes: Get your steps in while seeing sweeping views from Mt. Pisgah, a 157-foot tall sand dune along the Holland area shoreline. The 239-stair climb to the top of the dune grants you views of Lake Michigan, Holland Harbor Lighthouse, Lake Macatawa and more. |

Condos overlooking Lake Michigan proposed for U.P. destination town |
Construction: There are plans to develop condos on an empty piece of land along the shoreline of Lake Michigan’s Little Bay de Noc. Escanaba city manager James McNeil says the development, called Northshore Flats, would be on the pricier side, attracting retirees and young professionals. Unwanted: A temporary moratorium on new short-term rentals may be enacted in Muskegon as officials consider ways to cap their growing number. Residents say rowdy tenants and growing number of short-term are affecting their quality of life. On the market: MLive's House of the Week takes luxury living to a new level. The South Haven beachfront property has six-bedroom ensuites, nine bathrooms, a resort-style inground pool, outdoor kitchen, and more. |

Winter Weather Advisory now covers 62 Michigan counties for heavy snow, some sleet, ice glaze |
Be aware: A winter weather advisory starts at 4 a.m. for all of the advised counties. Western Lower Michigan has the advisory ending at 11 a.m. while the Saginaw Valley area has the advisory ending at 1 p.m. on Thursday. Northern Lower Michigan and the Upper Peninsula are under the winter weather advisory until 4 p.m. Thursday. Blanketed in snow: A type of low-pressure system known as an Alberta Clipper is moving southeast from Canada and is expected to leave many areas with their first measurable snow accumulation since mid-January. What's next: The strong El Niño that has influenced winter across the U.S. is starting to weaken. NOAA is now giving the prediction of when El Niño ends and if it may swing to a La Niña weather pattern. |

Can a group of college students help solve missing woman’s case after 15 years? Detectives hope so. |
Solving the case: The Michigan State Police and five students from Western Michigan University's Cold Case Program are helping the Fenton Police Department investigate the 2009 disappearance of Randa Jawhari. How it works: Each semester, a group of students are assigned a case with a detective who is actively investigating the case and open to working with the team. They meet about once a week and, eventually, create a research project on the case that details the investigation. Back at home: A 5-year-old Pontiac boy was reunited with his mother earlier this month after his father allegedly abducted him and fled the state. |

No snow? No problem. Don’t let warm winter days dampen outdoor plans |
Michigan's lack of snow might have cancelled a few traditional winter activities, but you can still have outdoor fun. From a relaxing night stargazing at one of Michigan's dark sky preserves to embarking on a winter hike, the Department of Natural Resources has several winter activities for you to try. Speaking of outdoors: The first signs of spring’s arrival at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore will be extra sweet this year, as the park hosts its second annual Maple Sugaring Days March 2-3. Gone glamping: If snoozing in a sleeping bag doesn't sound to appealing while camping, try one of the king-sized beds at The Woods, West Michigan’s newest glamping site. |
