For Michigan, third time is the charm. The No. 1-ranked Wolverines won an overtime thriller over Alabama on Monday, 27-20, to advance to their first national title game in College Football Playoff history. It wasn’t pretty at times for the Wolverines (14-0), but they made big plays down the stretch when they needed to and prevailed. Here are our takeaways and observations from the game. |

January forecast continues warmer trend |
According to the long-term forecast: El Niño continues to impact our chances at having a traditionally cold winter this year. The warmer than normal temperatures we had in December are expected to continue into January. Precipitation is also going to be on a lower-than-average trend for this month, unfortunately for snow lovers. Look up: The last significant meteor shower for months will hit maximum activity this week. Skywatchers under clear skies could be treated to up to 20 meteors per hour and possibly even fireballs.
To know: If you dream of someday seeing the Northern Lights, this might be your lucky year. According to experts at NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center, in 2024 the sun will reach “solar maximum." |

“A long to-do list”: Promise of a historic year of complete Democratic control led the Michigan Legislature in 2023. Despite another ambitious agenda, it wont be that simple in 2024.
Leaders in the Capitol plan to focus the first half of the year on issues including affordable and accessible housing, economic and community development and access to health care and prescription drugs.

Federal old-growth forests to be fostered instead of logged |
Michigan is home to three: Old-growth forests on federal lands across the nation are getting renewed attention – and being spared the ax – under an executive order by President Joe Biden. Have a radon system installed? If so, the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy (EGLE) may want to inspect it. An update: Counties across Michigan will have until July 6, 2024, to tell state environmental regulators whether they will update their recycling plans, work with neighboring counties to create a regional plan, or defer to the state to update materials management policies. |
