Beat the heat with a sweet treat🍦 |
With Michigan's weather warm up right around the corner, now is the perfect time to map out local spots to cool off with ice cream. A Genesee County ice cream shop is kicking its creative flavor combos up a notch with the release of their Flamin’ Hot Cheetos ice cream. Kearsley Kone also offers 36 hand-dipped flavors, soft serve and Dole whip, and flavors are changed every other week. If a kiddie cone isn't enough, grab the massive, foot long ice cream cone at Norm’s Ice Cream in Muskegon County. Try a frozen treat with plenty of mix-ins at Rollup Ice Cream & Eatery in Portage. To help build your list of sweet spots to visit, here's a roundup of ice cream shops in mid Michigan, Jackson, and Muskegon. |

Living donor driving 10K miles this summer to find ‘Kidneys for Kids’ |
Saving lives: A little more than a decade ago, Brian Martindale read a story in The Bay City Times about a child who needed a kidney transplant – a little girl he didn’t know – and was inspired to help. Martindale was a match and donated a kidney to Jessica Schwerin. It was a life-saving procedure for the then 10-year-old girl and a life-changing event for him. He’s now executive director of the nonprofit Kidneys for Kids on a mission to connect other would-be living donors with children who need kidneys. Monday, June 10 kicks off his 10,000 mile 2024 Driving for Life trip to promote living kidney donation in a driving tour across America. Also in health: A free vaccine clinic at the IINN Center in Flint will be offered on Tuesday, June 11. Flu, COVID-19, Tdap, and Hepatitis B vaccines will be available during the clinic which aims to promote health and wellness. |

Freighter safely in port after taking on water on Lake Superior |
On the water: A 689-foot freighter that took on water Saturday morning on Lake Superior has been safely moored. U.S. Coast Guard officials said dive teams are now investigating the cause of the flooding as well as the extent of damage to the freighter Michipicoten, which is moored in Thunder Bay, Ontario. What happened: The Coast Guard Sector Northern Great Lakes received a report at 6:53 a.m. Saturday, June 8, that the freighter had collided with an underwater object and was taking on water, the Coast Guard said in a post on X. The Canadian freighter was approximately 35 miles southwest of Isle Royale when the incident occurred. Some crew was evacuated from the ship. No injuries were reported. On the road: It’s another busy week of road construction with more than 100 projects on tap throughout the state. Here are 11 road closures this week that will affect lanes, ramps, and full segments of major roadways through Saturday, June 15. |

Definitely some heat coming; Here’s when and how hot |
Warmer days ahead: The extended forecasts are now showing summer heat is about to take over Michigan’s weather. The forthcoming upper-air pattern supports afternoon temperatures between 85 degrees and 93 degrees across Michigan. It looks like the heat at least stays around into the last week of June. Tornado activity: MLive's searchable tornado database includes all 1,108 confirmed tornados since 1950, and allows readers to look up their county and see all confirmed tornados during those years with details including date, time, strength, length and width of the storm path. Save the date: An exciting astronomical event is likely to occur in September, according to NASA. A binary star system—which is when two stars are gravitationally linked and orbit each other—nearly 3,000 light-years away is likely to create an astronomical event not seen in nearly 80 years. |

The last of the drive-ins: Catch a movie at Michigan’s 9 remaining outdoor theaters |
See a show: At the peak of drive-in popularity in the late 1950s, Michigan was home to 110 outdoor theaters. Today, that number has dwindled to nine. Here’s where movie nostalgia is still open for business in Michigan. Pretty huge: A massive 30-foot-tall robot art installation assembled last week in the Mackinaw Crossings shopping district has become the newest Northern Michigan photo op that people are flocking to. The robot, named Mack-A-Tron, is built with auto parts and pieces of the Mackinac Bridge. Also in business: Three more Red Lobster locations in Michigan are in danger of closing soon as the national seafood restaurant chain continues to work through bankruptcy proceedings. |

Michigan Flight Museum sells popular WWII-era ‘Yankee Lady’ aircraft |
Historic: The Michigan Flight Museum has sold its World War II-era Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress known as the “Yankee Lady,” one of the last remaining airworthy versions of the aircraft in existence. Though more than 12,000 B-17s were produced between 1935 and 1945, there are only 45 today in complete form. The Yankee Lady is one of only six that are still airworthy, as of November 2023. Open house: Tens of thousands of people have begun touring the inside of Michigan Central after the historic train depot opened on Friday, June 7, for the first time in more than three decades. Over the next 10 days, more than 60,000 people will tour the Station as part of the free Open House event. If you were not able to schedule a free tour, you can do so beginning on Friday, June 21. A caravan of tiny, retired railcars is making its way through Michigan this summer. The motorcars, nicknamed speeders, were once used to transport workers maintaining and inspecting railways and signal activity. In August, the speeders will once again travel through southern Michigan, taking a 150-mile trip through Indiana and Hillsdale County. Excursions are organized through the North American Railcar Operators Association. |
