Morning Briefing

FRIDAY, DECEMBER 8, 2023

In today's newsletter, why the Michigan Supreme Court won’t decide whether Trump belongs on ballots, conflicts of interest emerge in U.P. weed war, and Mackinac Island’s horse-powered deliveries.

The weekend is here. Time to relax.

Now that we're at the end of another week, rest and relaxation might be on the top of your mind.

A new sauna destination in Michigan's Keweenaw Peninsula is now welcoming guests to unwind. The Lake Superior Steam in Eagle Harbor offers sauna sessions in a beautiful wood-fired sauna set along the Lake Superior shore.

If being outdoors brings you a sense of peace, step into Mother Nature and experience 2023's final meteor showers. The fast and brightly colored Geminids will peak the night of Dec. 13. Dec. 21 marks the winter solstice and the Ursids' peak.

Why the Michigan Supreme Court won’t decide whether Trump belongs on ballots — yet

No decision yet: The Michigan Supreme Court will not consider barring former President Donald Trump from appearing on Michigan ballots until a lower court makes a decision on the matter.

In the piggy bank: A draft report from Michigan Republican Party insiders provided to MLive claims the state party is on “the brink of bankruptcy” under the leadership of embattled chair Kristina Karamo.

More details: The report is targeted squarely at Karamo’s “failed leadership,” and casts her as presiding over a series of disastrous decisions that crippled the party since being elected chair by Republican delegates in February.

‘The toothpaste has left the tube’: Ethical concerns, conflicts of interest emerge in U.P. weed war

Quite the stir: A marijuana boom in Menominee has led to allegations of secret deals between city leaders and marijuana retailers; a questionable decision by City Council to remove an ethics clause from the city’s marijuana ordinance; and a contentious move by the council to block a ballot proposal that would limit marijuana stores.

A different tree: Ottawa and Hiawatha National Forests in the U.P., and the Huron-Manistee National Forest in the Lower Peninsula are currently offering cut-your-own Christmas trees via a $5 permit through the U.S. Forest Service.

Also outdoors: Health officials are warning residents about a potential rabies outbreak after a skunk purchased from a Michigan breeder tested positive for the viral disease.

Michigan school shooter’s mom wants evidence of alleged affair, son’s bird torture blocked from trial

In the courtroom: Attorneys for Michigan school shooter Ethan Crumbley's mother, Jennifer Crumbley, asked a judge to forbid prosecutors from presenting evidence of her alleged extramarital affairs and her son's bird torture. Ethan Crumbley's sentencing is set for Friday, Dec. 8.

Consequences: Assaulting a health professional or medical volunteer while they are on the job will be punishable by a fine of up to $1,000 and/or 93 days in jail under legislation signed by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer on Dec. 6.

Also in crime: The last two men connected to the Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer kidnap plot were sentenced – one prison and the other probation – for their individual roles in the failed plan.

You've got mail: Mackinac Island is considered a unique Amazon delivery location. Its long-standing ban on most automobiles means Amazon’s regular delivery vans can’t motor down the streets. Between planes, boats, and horse-drawn flatbed drays, see how mail is delivered to the popular town.

Not quite Rudolph: Reindeer are visiting Bay County libraries this month, and there is one more opportunity to see them before Christmas. The reindeer will make their final stop, this time at Bay City’s Alice & Jack Wirt Public Library on Wednesday, Dec. 13.
