Michigan Capitol Commission OKs total gun ban with one exception |
New rules: Only currently sitting lawmakers with concealed pistol licenses will be able to keep their firearms in the Michigan Capitol after members of the State Capitol Commission unanimously moved to enact a total gun ban within building early Wednesday. Pushing back: Should the Michigan State Capitol Commission keep the ban on openly or concealed carrying firearms inside the Capitol building, at least one legislative Republican says the move could prompt legal action. More in politics: Gov. Whitmer pushed backed against Michigan’s elected State Board of Education in an interview with MLive this week for their disapproval of her plans to establish a new Michigan Department of Lifelong Education, Advancement and Potential. |

The current monarch butterfly ‘super generation’ is different from others, here’s why |
Pretty wings: The monarchs we witness in mid- to late August and early September are part of what’s known as the species’ annual “super generation” — a special group of butterflies that will live for up to eight months, traveling 10 times farther than their 2023 predecessors. Helping hand: Hundreds of baby sturgeon are about to find new homes this month, and you can help. The public is invited to attend multiple sturgeon release events happening across the Saginaw Bay area Saturday, Aug. 19. Vital role: Experts say Lake Michigan's giant water battery located south of Ludington is expected to be critically important as Michigan shifts away from fossil fuels and toward more renewable sources. |
