Holland's Windmill Island reopens to visitors on Saturday. Guests are "welkom" to participate in the "Run of the Mill" 5k, listen to the Salvation Army Brass Band, tour the grounds and more. |

Maggots and piles of trash: Michigan is home to one of the nation’s worst nursing home companies |
Investigation: Federal inspection reports and interviews with patients and former employees of nursing homes operated by Mission Point Healthcare Services paint a picture of a company where short-staffing and a lack of basic supplies are the norm and horrific outcomes are too common. One resident at the Mission Point home in Beverly Hills outside Detroit was left to sleep on a blood-stained mattress and fed from a tray on a dirty floor. At the Warren facility, a patient’s wound was left untreated so long that it was infested with maggots in the days before he died, according to a 2022 federal inspection report. What can be done about America's worst nursing homes? Advocates say there are straightforward ways to improve enforcement like raising the cost of fines, expanding government’s financial transparency requirements and not letting companies with bad track records grow. |

‘You failed as parents.’ Michigan school shooter’s mother and father sentenced to 10 years in prison |
Sentencing day: Oakland County Circuit Judge Cheryl A. Matthews on Tuesday, April 9, sentenced 46-year-old Jennifer Crumbley and James Crumbley, 47, to a minimum of 10 years in prison. They were convicted in separate jury trials of four counts each of involuntary manslaughter, a crime punishable by up to 15 years in prison. Matthews said James Crumbley allowed his son “unfettered access” to guns and ammunition and called Jennifer Crumbley’s behavior “dispassionate and apathetic.” Their convictions mark the first time in U.S. history that parents of a school shooter are being held criminally responsible for their role in the crimes of their child. In court: A Grand Blanc man was sentenced Monday to 22.5 years in prison for the 2018 murder of a hunter in Bath Township. |

Late-week large storm will bring heavy rain, car-shaking wind gusts, chilly day |
On the way: Michigan's upcoming storm has all rain and no snow. The rain starts Wednesday night and will cover all of Michigan by early Thursday morning. The storm will get windy as it reaches its peak, with 40 mph to 45 mph wind gusts Friday. Earth Day: A new, high-tech robot is coming to help clean up Detroit. The BeBot, by Searial Cleaners, will be deployed on Earth Day, April 22, to pick up litter at the beaches on Belle Isle and along the Detroit River, WDIV Detroit reports. Oak wilt: The Michigan Department of Natural Resources is urging people to pause any pruning of oak trees to help stop the spread of a deadly tree disease. |

Baseball: The Detroit Tigers rallied for four runs in the ninth inning to beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 5-3 Tuesday afternoon at PNC Park. The team (7-4) snapped a three-game losing streak, splitting the two-game series with the Pirates (9-3). Moving on: Michigan basketball’s top scorer Laila Phelia has entered the transfer portal. Phelia has scored 1,243 points for her career, helped Michigan reach the NCAA Tournament each of the past three seasons, played in last summer’s AmeriCup and more. |

Little Big Town has stadium and arena concerts planned for Michigan in 2024 |
Country music fans: Little Big Town has two big concerts planned for Michigan in 2024 with a lot of star power coming along with them. They'll open for Chris Stapleton and George Strait in Detroit on July 13. In Grand Rapids Sugarland will open for the band on November 9. An "exclusive show": Most Maroon 5 fans will have to travel to Las Vegas to see the band perform in 2024. Between Vegas residency shows, the band will play one concert in Michigan on Friday, June 21 at Pine Knob Music Theatre. Celebrity spotting: Meet “Cheers” stars, John Ratzenberger and George Wendt during the Motor City Comic Con at the Suburban Collection Showplace in Novi from Friday, May 17 through Sunday, May 19. Both actors will be at the event all three days. |
