Michigan needs more high-pay, skilled jobs or risks further decline |
Twenty years ago, a group of Michigan researchers published a report indicating a shift away from factory jobs and a greater concentration of high-paying, high-education jobs would be key to keeping the state from becoming among the poorest in the country. On Monday, Jan. 22, the same researchers from the University of Michigan published an updated version of their 2004 report, again offering the same warnings to state leaders, whom they say have made saving manufacturing jobs a top economic priority. Hiring: A freight company based in suburban Grand Rapids plans to add 352 new jobs and wants to open a new headquarters in the area. |

School leaders had ‘simply forgotten’ to give tests required for graduation, emails show |
| The testing issue: Phoenix High School officials “had forgotten” to administer the M-STEP social studies and science tests as scheduled in 2022-23, which was part of a flurry of issues that led to the school allowing students to graduate who weren’t eligible. Investigating : Who is more accurate at predicting snow days: Humans or artificial intelligence (AI)? Students at Rockford High School are putting that question to the test this winter as part of a class project. In politics: Gov. Gretchen Whitmer plans to announce the state will set aside nearly $1.4 billion in funding to build or rehabilitate housing throughout the state. They said the funding would be enough to make nearly 10,000 housing units available. |

Deer harvest numbers down in all but 6 Michigan counties |
Michigan hunters reported harvesting 274,055 total deer during the 2023 deer hunting season. This is 29,094 fewer deer than in 2022, for a 9% decline, according to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. In the water: The Michigan DNR finished its fish stocking efforts strong in 2023. They stocked Michigan waters with six different species totaling 1,076,204 fish and 14.5 tons at 103 locations throughout the state. Apply now: The DNR is hiring for a variety of temporary spring wildlife positions that are available around the state. |

Jim Harbaugh in L.A., ‘in striking distance’ with Chargers |
Leaving college football? Jim Harbaugh was scheduled for a second interview with the Los Angeles Chargers yesterday, and a deal to bring the Michigan coach back to the NFL appears close. Up on the list: ESPN’s NFL draft analyst last week called J.J. McCarthy a “borderline first-round pick.” This week, Mel Kiper has McCarthy going No. 16 to the Seattle Seahawks in his latest mock draft for ESPN.
For the Spartans: Tom Izzo’s mantra for Michigan State basketball hasn’t changed in decades: defend, rebound and run. But while that’s still the goal, the way this roster is constructed has called for a tweak.

Mom says nothing before she’s sentenced to prison for torturing son to death |
An update: A mom will never see a day of freedom again, a judge ordered, after she was sentenced for intently torturing her teen son Timothy Ferguson to death in one of Muskegon County’s most notable horrific cases. Siblings react: The courtroom was packed Tuesday afternoon. Nolan Ferguson and Millie Ferguson – Timothy’s siblings – traveled from out of state to deliver emotional victim impact statements and remember their sweet, blue-eyed little brother, “Tim Tim.” More in crime: Jury selection in the criminal trial of Jennifer Crumbley, the 45-year-old mother of a teen shooter who killed four students at Oxford High School on Nov. 30, 2021, began yesterday. |
