Michigan's economy won't heal overnight after 2020, economists say Things were looking up when Michigan’s steadily-growing economy entered 2020. Michigan’s trends largely mirrored the nation’s – as the U.S. economy had been growing for 128 months dating back to 2009. It was the longest recovery on record, dating back to the 1960s. It was supposed to be a prosperous 2020. “It’s a little depressing to think about that,” said Michael McWilliams, economics researcher at the University of Michigan. “We were projecting more of the same – continued growth … record expansion in Michigan.” The pandemic isn’t over, but the post-mortem on 2020′s economic damage is already underway. The Michigan High School Athletics Association has maintained that it desires to have and finish all three sports seasons, but the latest extension of the pause on indoor contact sports that affects most winter sports has many communities, administrators, coaches, players and parents on edge because of the uncertainty of if that goal is achievable. Because the winning ticket was sold in Michigan and the money won is considered income, the state is set to collect tax on the player’s total winnings and that money will be divided between two funds on the state level. Whenever the winner comes forward, the state will have to impose a 4.25% tax on the winner’s payday. Depending on if the player takes the full annuitized prize of $1.05 billion or the cash option of $776.6 million, the state will collect taxes on that payout. MORE See 'Lamby' there?
