On May 13, 1980, a tornado hit the city of Kalamazoo, carving out an 11-mile path of destruction. Five were killed and more than 70 people were injured. The damage left 1,200 residents displaced from their homes. Officials estimated the tornado caused $50 million in damage, destroying houses and businesses.
