Michigan's sub-zero weather likely has you wishing for extra ways to warm up.
Try one of the steamy new saunas at Mt. Bohemia ski resort in the U.P.’s Keweenaw Peninsula. The resort has expanded its Nordic sauna options to include a Himalayan salt sauna and a large panoramic Finnish sauna that overlooks the mountain’s slopes.
A taste of piping hot chili might also do the trick. Businesses and restaurants in St. Joseph are whipping up their best recipes for the city’s 2024 chili competition on Friday, Jan. 26. |

Still cold: If you're looking for a break in Michigan's frigid temperatures, hold on a few more days. Meteorologists at the National Weather Service office in Grand Rapids said only five more days remain until the cold weather pattern breaks. Groundhog Day: Michigan’s official groundhog, Woody the Woodchuck, will soon weigh in on whether there will be six more weeks of winter or if spring is coming soon. Climate news: Forestland in the eastern United States is growing faster, while the woods out West are becoming more stagnant – the consequences of a changing climate. |

Jurors may view ‘mass chaos’ in Michigan school shooting video, judge rules |
An Oakland County judge ruled surveillance video of the shooting inside Oxford High School may be shown to jurors. Presiding Circuit Judge Cheryl A. Matthews said the video was recorded from a distance and, “because the video lacks audio, the jury will not hear the sounds of gunfire, screaming and other expressions of mass chaos.” Status quo: Choosing a graduation gown color can be nerve-wracking for transgender and nonbinary students at Kalamazoo Central High School. One student is hoping to dump the "archaic" choice of graduation gown colors that have been historically determined by gender. Also in education: Flint Community Schools has partnered with Talent Together, a statewide education initiative that helps people become certified teachers, to develop an Alternative Pathways program. |

Ford Field sets new decibel record, really was as loud as a jet engine |
Making noise: Ford Field topped out at 133.6 decibels for the 24-23 playoff thriller on Sunday night against the Los Angeles Rams, according to the team, smashing the old stadium record of 127.6. That’s equivalent to the sound of a 747 jet engine at takeoff, according to the Center for Disease Control. Who's next? With J.J. McCarthy on his way out, having decided to forego his final year of eligibility and declare for the NFL draft, Michigan's quarterback position is considered wide open heading into spring practice for the first time in four seasons.
Baseball: Baseball is right around the corner.The Tigers will open the 2024 regular season in Chicago against the White Sox on March 28. Their home opener is April 5 against Oakland Athletics at Comerica Park.
