College campuses are empty across Michigan. In-person classes were suspended last month to help limit the spread of the coronavirus. The changes are costing higher education institutions millions of dollars. It's impacting small private colleges as well as large public universities. Like other industries, higher education is using hiring freezes and furloughs as cost-saving tools. At the same time, in an effort to limit declines in enrollment, many colleges are implementing tuition freezes, meaning they can't make up any revenue losses there.
