Michigan school district announces $10,000 pay increase for teachers

Raising the bar: More big news is coming out of Battle Creek Public Schools—this time for teachers. Teachers in the district will receive an average increase of more than $10,000 to their salary next school year, thanks to an agreement between the district and the Battle Creek Education Association union.

Built from the ground up: Soon to be hitting the Ann Arbor-area housing market is a home built by Ann Arbor Public Schools students that its program director says could be the country’s largest completed by high school students in one year.

More in education: A Grand Rapids-based talent development alliance has launched the Michigan Center for Adult College Success, a $9.2 million statewide initiative to help more adults earn a college degree or postsecondary certification.

How will road construction impact Memorial Day travel in Michigan?

Hitting the road: Many Michiganders hitting the road this Memorial Day Weekend will get a break from ongoing construction projects. Beginning 3 p.m. Friday, May 26, the state is suspending road work and lifting traffic lane restrictions on 81 of its 146 statewide road and bridge projects (55%) to ease traffic delays and improve driver and worker safety.

Speaking of funding: Backed by Detroit’s mayor and police leaders in Detroit and Grand Rapids, Democrats in the legislature want to divert millions of dollars of sales tax revenue to fight violent crime in Michigan’s worst-affected cities.

Trans athletes can play sports in Michigan, just not win, under GOP-backed bill

More than half of all Republicans in the Michigan House support an effort to record scores from transgender student athletes under their biological sex, rather than the gender they present as.

Breaking it down: That would mean, under House Bill 4546, a transgender girl would be allowed to swim alongside cisgender girls on a high school swim team, but – should she win at a meet – her times would not be recorded alongside that of her teammates. Instead, they’d fall under swim times recorded by high school boys.
