Summertime in Michigan means festival season is upon us. Just this weekend, Muskegon held its Lakeshore Art Festival. You may find relaxation at the upcoming seventh annual Lavender Harvest Festival in Milan. Lavender Lane Co-Owner Joe Pusta said this year’s lavender plants seem to be bigger than ever before. Tulip Time is already planning for next year as they put out an artist call for its 2025 festival poster with the First Bloem competition. |

Michigan summer energy forecast predicts lower costs at the pump, higher home electric usage |
There’s good news and bad for budget-conscious Michiganders when it comes to the state’s summer energy forecast, covering everything from costs at the fuel pump to demand for electricity over the warmer months. On the positive side of things, those gassing up for summer road trips are expected to benefit from a lower average price per gallon during the April to September driving season, according to the state summer energy outlook released by the Michigan Public Service Commission on June 24. More in environmental news: Algae season has begun on Lake Erie and forecasters are expecting the toxic bloom severity to be “moderate to larger-than-moderate” this year. |

An early look at July 4 weather |
Some high temps, some rain: For Wednesday through Friday, it looks like most of us should have temperatures in the 80s for the three days’ afternoon temperatures. The long holiday weekend we will not be entirely dry. On the other hand, we may only have a few hours of storms at your location through the long holiday period. Speaking of the holiday: James Stajos has made a life out of lighting up people’s holidays — from helping his dad sell fireworks to lobbying for consumer fireworks legislation in 2011 to now operating Michigan’s largest brick-and-mortar fireworks chain. MSU increases tuition by 2.7 percent for most students |
Larger price tag: Michigan State University will raise tuition by $470 a year for all full-time undergraduate students this fall, regardless of whether they’re from Michigan or out of state. In Kalamazoo: Western Michigan University’s Board of Trustees hiked tuition to $15,252 starting in fall 2024. Tuition for a resident first-year undergraduate student is increasing by 4.5%, $658 more than fall 2023. The dollar increase is the university’s largest since 2008-09. ‘They don’t care about us': Concordia University Ann Arbor will offer only a handful of programs after the 2024-25 academic year. Students and faculty fear this is just the step before full closure. |

Detroit Pistons reportedly hiring J.B. Bickerstaff as head coach |
Big news: With the NBA free agency period officially started, the Detroit Pistons have made yet another hire—arguably their most important one. A league source confirmed to MLive that the Detroit Pistons made a deal to hire J.B. Bickerstaff as head coach. Reports state that Bickerstaff agreed to a five-year deal, with four years fully guaranteed. Recap: The Detroit Red Wings added eight players to their prospects pipeline this weekend at the NHL entry draft at Sphere in Las Vegas, including first-round pick right wing Michael Brandsegg-Nygard. General manager Steve Yzerman and Kris Draper, assistant GM and director of amateur scouting, assessed each prospect to media at the draft. Fabulous footwear: Holland native Heather Truong, a recent college grad, has added a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to her resume - designing a footwear line for legendary tennis star Serena Williams. |

Michigan ban on taxpayer-funded abortions targeted by lawsuit |
Abortion-rights supporters filed a lawsuit Thursday seeking to overturn Michigan’s longtime ban on taxpayer-funded abortions for low-income residents, arguing it cannot stand after voters in 2022 approved a sweeping constitutional amendment ensuring access to the medical procedure. More on the topic: Erica Shekell, communications director at Planned Parenthood of Michigan, said the number of out-of-state patients seeking abortion care has tripled over the past two years. In politics: After President Joe Biden’s poor debate performance raised further concerns about his age and ability to win reelection, national outlets and pundits have floated possible candidates to replace him at the top of the Democratic ticket, including Gov. Gretchen Whitmer. |
