Where unemployment rates are lowest in Michigan as state hits 23-year low

Hired: Michigan's unemployment rates reached 3.6% in July 2023, hitting a 23 year low. An increase of about 63,000 jobs from this time last year brought the latest jobs count to about 4.44 million, according to data from the governor’s office. Here's a map of Michigan’s unemployment rates by county.

Feeling the strain: The forecast for Labor Day weekend looks red hot and small businesses are hoping their sales tabs will look the same. But employers are worried about staffing for the holiday weekend as young workers head back to college and high school.

Pushing back: The UAW has filed unfair labor practices charges against General Motors and Stellantis for bad faith bargaining, president Shawn Fain told members on Thursday, Aug. 31.

Regulators ‘concerned’ after two Michigan doctors issue 23,000 medical marijuana cards

Data says: Eighteen Michigan doctors were responsible for nearly 62% of 134,709 medical marijuana patient certifications cards issued in Michigan between April 1, 2021 and Sept. 29, 2022, according a performance review of Cannabis Regulatory Agency data.

Based on advertised certification fees that start near $100, those two doctors likely generated more than $2 million over that timeframe. The disproportionately large number issued by a small number of doctors “concerned” CRA officials.

More health news: Teens at Godwin Heights High School will soon be able to access a full range of medical care services just steps away from their classroom, thanks to a new school-based health center opening inside the school this fall.

Up North: This weekend's weather in northern Michigan is expected to be sunny and warm. Remember the still-strong sunshine will make us feel hotter than the actual thermometer reads.

Mackinac Bridge to be closed to vehicles for annual Labor Day bridge walk

Annual tradition: If your holiday weekend travel plans include crossing the Mackinac Bridge, remember to plan around the bridge walk. The bridge will be closed to traffic from 6:30 a.m. to noon on Monday, Sept. 4.
