Much of Michigan under excessive heat warnings, advisories: What’s the difference |
Heating up: Most of the Lower Peninsula is under a heat advisory while a few counties in the southeast corner are an excessive heat warning. A heat advisory in Michigan is issued if the heat index is going to be between 100 and 104 degrees. The National Weather Service at Detroit has issued the more dangerous excessive heat warning for Genesee, Oakland, Macomb and Wayne counties. It's electric: For many customers of the state’s largest electric utilities, DTE Energy and Consumers Energy, the warmer months mean higher rates, including peak pricing during certain parts of the day meant to encourage users to lower energy usage when demand is high. Cool down: Computer models that look out 10 days already show another dramatic shift in the weather pattern. The cold front will probably move through Sunday or next Monday, cooling temperatures down dramatically. |

Summer solstice 2024: When does summer officially kick off this week? |
Summertime is here: The most widely recognized start to the summer season is the summer solstice, which falls this year on Thursday, June 20. On that day, the sun at noon will be at its highest point in the sky in the Northern Hemisphere. You can observe by the position of the sun and also by noticing how short the shadows are at midday. Tradition: A quirky piece of history stands tall at the corner of Center and Ferry in Douglas: a handmade root beer barrel. The 16-foot tall barrel has been a staple since it first rolled into town in the 1950s. Located just a couple blocks from Douglas Park Beach and less than two miles from Oval Beach, the barrel is a popular spot to start or end a beach day. In case you missed it: The historic Sand Point Lighthouse in Escanaba is open daily for self-guided tours, officials said. Admission includes access to the Delta County Historical Society’s museum, boathouse, along with former U.S. Coast Guard building and grounds. |

Betsy DeVos: Adding LGBTQ protections to Title IX will push women out of sports |
Title IX changes: Former Education Secretary Betsy DeVos called the Biden administration’s planned overhaul of Title IX a “clear and present danger” to female athletes, arguing that protections for transgender athletes would push women out of women’s sports. Making the team: First-year Michigan State coach Jonathan Smith continues to put an emphasis on recruiting his new home state. Jayden Savoury, a 2025 three-star tight end from Orchard Lake St. Mary’s Prep, announced his commitment to the Spartans over other Big 10 schools via social media on Monday. In remembrance: A former longtime major league baseball player and coach who made a stop with the Detroit Tigers died over the weekend in a car crash. Mike Brumley was killed in Mississippi on Saturday night, according to multiple reports. He was 61. |

Legendary Michigan singer has street named after him; but not just any street |
One of Michigan’s most famous singers now has a street named after him at the intersection of his former home. A street naming event took place this weekend in honor of Otis Williams, the founding member and last original surviving member of The Temptations. Otis C. Williams Street is located at the corner of Wisconsin and Santa Clara at 17376 Wisconsin Street on Detroit’s northwest side. Maybe next time: Living legend, Stevie Nicks, will no longer perform in Grand Rapids this week. The Rock and Roll Hall of Famer has postponed her Van Andel Arena concert that was slated for Tuesday, June 18. The concert has now been rescheduled for Tuesday, September 24. Silver screen: Emagine Entertainment announced it will give all educators and school staff tickets to see any movie they want throughout the month of July for free. |
