Michigan officer on leave after killing Annie, the ‘friendly’ deer |
For the past 2 years,the Lawrence community -- which is 30 miles west of Kalamazoo -- interacted with a "friendly" deer who they called Annie. The animal’s life was cut short abruptly last week on Oct. 20, when an officer with the Pokagon Band Tribal Police Department killed the deer while a suspect was being arrested on a warrant. “That deer’s nice!":Clips of the killing are circulating online, including one that shows the shooting and another video that cuts off before the shooting. The officer was placed on administrative leave for an investigation. More in public interest: Bay City Central High School students were dismissed from class early on Monday after the school received two potential threats. |

State issues show cause to Consumers Energy in investigation of faulty meters |
The latest: The Michigan Public Service Commission has directed Consumers Energy to “show cause” why it shouldn’t be held in violation of rules governing its billing and service quality and reliability. In environmental news: Michigan state environmental regulators will divvy up more than $16 million in federal infrastructure funding to utilities and power cooperatives to improve the resiliency of aging electric grids. From Calumet Electronics: An Upper Peninsula electronics company plans to build a $51 million factory that will onshore a critical technology used by the aerospace and defense industries. |

Pronoun, bathroom use for Michigan’s trans students prompts legal opinion request |
Michigan’s Civil Rights Commission voted unanimously Monday to seek a legal opinion on whether denying transgender and non-binary students the ability to use the bathrooms and pronouns of their choice constitutes a violation of state civil rights law. Purpose: The requests could pave the way for interpretive statements that would be seen as effectively law in Michigan until someone challenged the matter in court. Also in politics: U.S. Rep. Jack Bergman is out of the running to become the next speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives. |

Michigan State loses two more players to transfer portal |
Looking for a new school: Redshirt junior defensive tackle Simeon Barrow and junior offensive tackle Keyshawn Blackstock have entered the transfer portal, a program spokesman confirmed. Spartans in pro hoops: Former Michigan State players are playing both in the NBA and in locales all around the world this season. Here’s a look at where former Michigan State players are suiting up in 2023-24. For the Wolverines: Nebraska coach Matt Rhule and Deion Sanders have spoke out about Michigan’s sign-stealing scandal while Jim Harbaugh talks tattoo pledge, MSU ‘cheap shots’ and starting DL injury. |

Text messages about killing hunter in 2018 were just ‘stupid jokes,’ defense claims |
Could be shared: Potentially damning text messages sent between two men suspected of killing a hunter in 2018 may be shown to the jury, a Clinton County Circuit Court judge ruled Monday, Oct. 23. Have you seen her?: The search for Kelly McWhirter, a 60-year-old Genesee County employee who is suspected to be the victim of foul play, continues. An update: Police arrested a 57-year-old Lansing man Saturday in connection with the death of 29-year-old Alicia Gallegos, whose body was found on the side of the road last week in White Oak Township. |
