Over 1,000 Blue Cross Blue Shield UAW workers walk out on strike |
Picket line: Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan workers represented by the United Auto Workers walked out of work Wednesday after the union and health insurance giant were unable to reach a deal on a new contract. Still negotiating: The United Auto Workers have entered the final phase of negotiations with Ford, Stellantis and General Motors and they remain “very far apart,” UAW President Shawn Fain said. Also in the workforce: The Escanaba Mill, a key Upper Peninsula employer, will temporarily lay off employees the first two weeks of October due to a maintenance outage and low demand for paper. |

Donations soar 85 percent at Trump-supporting Michigan college since 2017 |
Cashing in: Hillsdale College, long an important institution for conservative intellectuals, became increasingly tied to former president Donald Trump's administration. Donations have soared 85 percent at the private liberal arts college since 2017. More dorms: The state’s newly adopted budget includes a $40-million earmark for a new dormitory on the campus of the Michigan School for Deaf, the biggest such set-aside for any institution in Genesee County this year. In Jackson: More than a dozen Jackson College students spoke during the Jackson College Board of Trustee’s meeting Monday night to tell college administrators they’ve experienced racism and harassment at the school. |

Here’s how Hurricane Lee will improve Michigan’s weekend weather |
Nice weather: Michigan could have less rain and warmer temperatures this weekend thanks to Hurricane Lee. Slated to make landfall as a tropical storm in the northeastern U.S., Lee will act as a block and slow a storm system coming toward Michigan. Here is the current rain forecast for Saturday into Sunday. Historical snowfall: A century ago this week there was snow in the Upper Peninsula. It was Sept. 12, 1923 when less than an inch of snow was recorded in Iron River. According to the National Weather Service in Marquette, it is the earliest date on record for measurable snowfall in the U.P. A little warm: Michigan will see a gradual warm-up in the next 6-10 days. Extended forecasts show how hot it could get. |

Get dressed: Event organizers for Keweenaw Plaidurday are seeking to break the current Guinness World Record for most people wearing plaid. Participants are invited to wear plaid-patterned clothing at a gathering at the Houghton High School football field on Friday, Oct. 6 at 12:45 p.m. Taking flight: Starting in late September, Isle Royale Seaplanes in Hancock is offering 30-minute fall color flights over some of the Upper Peninsula’s most scenic spots. Dine outside: Ludington will soon be blooming with fall colors, this Lake Michigan beach town has five prime places to sit outside, breath in the crisp autumn air, and enjoy a tasty meal. |
