Over 1,200 childcare facilities in Michigan could close as federal aid comes to end |
A federal program that allocated money to states for childcare during the COVID-19 pandemic expired Sept. 30. The loss is expected to have devastating impacts on an already burdened childcare industry, potentially causing facilities to close and children to lose care. Details: Michigan received over $1.1 billion of the funding. Impacting up to 290,500 children, 6,465 Michigan childcare programs received stabilization support, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Service’s Office of Child Care. Impact: The Century Foundation, a progressive think tank, projects over 1,200 childcare facilities in Michigan could close with the loss of funding, affecting more than 56,000 children. |

Crashes are more common at roundabouts but there are benefits |
Found with 15 years worth of crash data: Roundabouts are generally associated with a greater number of vehicle crashes when compared to traditional stop- and signal-controlled intersections. However, the crashes are less severe and there continue to be benefits to roundabouts, including reduced traffic delays and fuel savings, according to a recent study commissioned by the state. Plans to run: Chris Glasser, Joseph Alfonso and Jessica Swartz have registered to compete for the Democratic Party nomination to represent Michigan’s 4th District in the U.S. House of Representatives. Saginaw and Genesee: Republican Vivek Ramaswamy’s 2024 presidential campaign will make two stops in mid-Michigan on Wednesday, Oct. 4. Michigan Civil War Gov. Austin Blair is only person honored with statue at Capitol. The statue, depicting the devout abolitionist who led Michigan through America's deadliest battle, is nearing its 125th anniversary. |

Booze in the Big House? Feedback wanted on alcohol sales at Michigan Stadium |
Give your opinion: University of Michigan officials are looking for community input on alcohol sales at campus athletic venues prior to official approval from the Board of Regents. An online survey, found here and accessible to students, faculty, staff, alumni and retirees, is open through midnight Friday, Oct. 6. People must log into the survey with their university user name and password. In East Lansing: Tom Izzo finally has depth at Michigan State – and a plan to manage it. |

October skywatching: See ‘Ring of Fire’ eclipse, fall meteor shower, bright planets |
Skywatchers have some blockbuster events to look forward to this month, as October brings about the annual Orionids meteor shower, a rare “ring of fire” solar eclipse, the full Hunter’s Moon, and some dazzling displays with bright planets Jupiter, Venus and Saturn. At Ludington State Park: The Friends of Ludington State Park group is hosting its fall celebration from 1-5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 7. It features fall color wagon rides, Celtic music and a beach bonfire. A good girl named Jellybean: A new canine advocate has been added to the staff of a local Michigan prosecutor’s office to comfort anxious victims and witnesses during court, officials announced. |
