It's almost time for the weekend |
The weekend won't be a warm one, but at least it'll be dry. We’ve had many afternoons in the 60s and 70s the past few weeks, but Saturday will be the coldest day since March 27. Sunday morning will be around freezing or colder for all of us. This weekend marks the first of the official road construction season in Michigan. If you plan on traveling, here are some road closures to look out for. There are more than 20 new road projects. Searching for something to do? | People released from Michigan prisons are going back at near lowest rate ever |
Recidivism rates for Michigan prisoners released back into the public was at a near record low this year. According to the Michigan Department of Corrections, 22.7% of those released from prison since 2020 returned to prison within three years. This mean slightly less than 1 of every 4 prisoners released from prison in the last three years ended up back in prison. An update: The U.S. Supreme Court has denied a bid from seven attorneys who brought a lawsuit alleging fraud in Michigan during the 2020 presidential election to overturn sanctions handed down by a federal judge for their role in the “frivolous” legal action. Left behind: Two students found a handgun in a Kenowa Hills High School bathroom after a Kent County sheriff’s deputy apparently left it there while using the restroom. |

Racial slurs prompt student’s suspension, staff member’s departure at CMU |
A Central Michigan University student has been suspended, and a staff member has been “separated from the university” after two incidents involving racial slurs. A video circulating on social media earlier this week showed “individuals using racist language.” The Office for Institutional Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion then hosted a listening session for faculty and staff to discuss the video. At the listening session, a staff member used an “inappropriate and highly offensive word.” Speaking of schools: Michigan schools would need more comprehensive plans for cardiac emergencies under proposed legislation being considered by state lawmakers. Helping hand: There's a squirrel whisperer at the University of Michigan who has documented the animals in about 130,000 photos and gives the fluffy rodents medicine to help them heal from the skin disease mange. |

RFK Jr. to appear on Michigan ballots as presidential candidate for Natural Law Party |
Campaigning as a third-party candidate: Michigan Secretary of State officials confirmed Robert F. Kennedy Jr. will appear as a candidate on presidential election ballots in Michigan in November. ‘It doesn’t smell right’: Joseph S. Dulak is facing criticism after a company he’s linked to benefited from the marijuana business. Public records reviewed by MLive show that a real estate firm linked to Dulak profited $69,000 in October from a property flip to a marijuana business. He has helped shape marijuana policy as a member of the city council in Menominee, a U.P. border town with a lucrative weed market. Showing concern:More than $1 billion could be invested in restarting a nuclear plant near South Haven, but residents aren’t sold yet that this would be a positive move. |

Black uniforms a big hit for Dan Campbell, who requested them just weeks into job |
Black jerseys had become something of a persona non grata in Detroit. The Lions rolled out a black-dominant uniform in 2005, then lost a whole bunch of games. The Lions swore off black for good when they redesigned their uniforms in 2018. Then Dan Campbell returned to Detroit, where he once played for the Lions, and once played in black. He wanted it back. “Win the division,” Rod Wood told Campbell in 2021. “And we’ll bring the black jerseys back.” Now the Lions are the reigning NFC North champs. And on Thursday night, they rolled out a new black uniform -- along with updates to their primary home and aways -- under that championship banner during an event for 5,000 season-ticket holders at Ford Field. In basketball: Immediately after Michigan State lost in the NCAA Tournament, Tom Izzo indicated that point guard A.J. Hoggard likely wouldn’t return to the program next season. A month later, he’s saying it more definitively: Hoggard’s time at Michigan State is over. |
