Morning Briefing

TUESDAY, JULY 18, 2023

In today's newsletter, a look at the weather for this week, the greatest athletes in Michigan history and a new wine shop offers chef-made food to go.

What does the weather look like this week?

Mark Torregrossa says a rather large storm system for this time of year will drop down into the Great Lakes this week. That might sound like all stormy weather, but that’s actually not the case.

The storm system coming toward us won’t bring widespread rain showers until Thursday. Before the next rain comes some sun, some smoke and what most would consider great summer temperatures.

Generally look for afternoon temperatures in the 70s and low-80s this week. Morning temperatures will be in the 50s and 60s.

Poor students and Black students are disappearing from Michigan colleges

What we're seeing: As the number of college students in Michigan has plummeted over the last decade or so, the numbers of low-income students and Black students have fallen much faster.

The number of Michigan college students eligible for federal Pell grants, which go largely to students from low-income families, fell by 52 percent between 2011 and 2021, according to federal data compiled by Michigan Independent Colleges & Universities. It’s the largest drop in the country, both numerically and percentagewise.

Another deep dive: This is why one Michigan governor’s official portrait appears forever unfinished.

A Michigan town didn’t want a Dollar General. Then it got sued.

No thank you: Last summer, dozens of people packed into a small township hall - most to speak against a Dollar General moving into their southwest Michigan farming community. This opposition worked, at first.

Four weeks later a federal lawsuit came, and now a 10,640-square-foot chain dollar store is replacing a former cornfield on M-86. Dollar General has rapidly expanded in recent years. Nearly 700 stores are scattered across every Michigan county except one. Not every community has welcomed this expansion.
