In today's newsletter, Trump holds Michigan rally, an island in Northern Michigan fears for its future and some cable subscribers will lose Tigers games. |
Make your yard the best it can be |
For Michigan gardeners, May signals the season’s big kick-off — a time to finally get planting after months of preparation and plans. But there are a few key things to do this month to ensure a successful vegetable garden including hardening off transplants. While we're outside, we also have some tips on how to eliminate crabgrass, a common enemy of lawn-lovers. Today might be a good day to get outside as very warm air is heading our way ahead of a line of thunderstorms. Tomorrow will have a good chance for some of us to hit 80 degrees. |

Safety grades declined for 16 Michigan hospitals. How did yours score? |
Assessed: Michigan’s spring 2024 hospital safety report card is here, with fewer “A” and “B” grades than the fall but also fewer failing grades. Of the 81 hospitals evaluated by the national non-profit watchdog The Leapfrog Group, 25 received top marks with an “A” and 23 came close with a “B.” Five hospitals were given a “D,” including four in Metro Detroit and one in Bay City. See the data for each hospital here. $1.1 billion legacy: After 54 years, the Richard and Helen DeVos Foundation, whose late founders left an indelible mark on West Michigan and beyond with landmark gifts to hospitals, universities, churches, cultural institutions and more, is officially sunsetting on May 1. An update: Seven people who were injured last month when a car crashed through the wall of the Swan Creek Boat Club have joined a lawsuit against the driver of the car and multiple other defendants. |

‘Everything’s bad,’ Trump tells Michigan rally, offering policy solutions |
In politics: During a campaign rally here, Donald Trump was critical of American border security policies, complained about his ongoing criminal trial, revisited 2020 election claims, and discussed his plans to support Michigan manufacturing jobs. Largely, though, the Republican presidential candidate’s 75-minute address involved political attacks against his opponent in the 2024 election, President Joe Biden. Be aware: People who are vaping marijuana may not be getting the end product of a plant in their lungs, but a converted, synthetic form of THC derived from CBD instead. It may be more dangerous. Nationally: After decades of regulation that stood in direct opposition to the will of many American voters -- and the majority Michigan voters since 2008 -- the DEA plans to eliminate its strict federal prohibition on marijuana. Here's what that means for Michigan. |

With ferry service facing cuts, an island in Northern Michigan fears for its future |
Neebish Island is separated from the Upper Peninsula mainland by a narrow channel of the St. Mary’s River. The ferry ride across takes five minutes. But soon the ferry won’t run as late or as often as it used to, and the island’s few dozen permanent residents and the few hundred who come during the summer are worried that it will choke off the island's lifeblood. Lost now found: A Great Lakes shipwreck group announced today that it has found the final resting place of a 735-ton wooden steamship that was loaded down with a cargo of salt and crossing Lake Superior when it sank in a fierce gale in 1909, taking all 14 crew members with it. Back on land: This Northern Michigan snowmobiling town is working to showcase itself as an off-roading destination with the opening of more than 100 miles of scenic ORV trails. |

Some cable subscribers will lose Tigers games |
Cutting the cord: If you usually follow the Detroit Tigers on Bally Sports Detroit through your Comcast Xfinity package, you’ll have to find another way to watch. A dispute between Comcast and the operator of the Bally Sports regional sports networks has taken channels like Bally Sports Detroit off the air effective immediately. Optimism: The Detroit Tigers entered May with 17 wins, the second-most in franchise history. Only the 1984 World Series champions, who celebrate their 40th anniversary this summer, had more wins at the end of April. A fighting chance: The Wolverines have won 13 straight games and have a shot at leaping the Wildcats for the Big Ten crown heading into the final week of the regular season. |
