Best in class: College destination data for Michigan high school students who graduated in 2023 is out, and a familiar choice once again takes the top spot. About 11% of all college enrollees from Michigan high schools went to Michigan State University, according to Michigan Department of Education’s transparency dashboard, mischooldata.org. Getting to school: The Jackson Area Transportation Authority and the Jackson-branch of U.S. Staffing have partnered to donate hundreds of free bus passes for students with transportation needs from Jackson and Western high schools. Also in higher ed: Amid divestment demands from pro-Palestinian protesters, University of Michigan leaders said Thursday they will not change how they invest based on political pressures. |

Portion of St. Marys River remains closed after big freighter hits buoy, no pollution reported |
Anchored: The U.S. Coast Guard says a portion of the St. Marys River will remained closed until a big freighter can be safely removed from the river after it hit a buoy Thursday morning. The American Mariner, a 730-foot bulk cargo ship, was not carrying any cargo when it hit the Mud Lake Junction Light with its bow around 1 a.m. Still closed: Work has been delayed on the U.S. 31 bridge in Manistee and won’t be fully open until late June, officials said. The $16 million project includes replacing portions of the deck, upgrading mechanical and electrical systems, painting structural steel and approach improvements. Updates: Ypsilanti’s Spring Street bridge near the former Ford and Visteon plant along I-94 will close for mandatory repairs beginning April 1. |

Michigan lawmaker says ‘illegal invaders’ landed in Detroit, but they were NCAA basketball teams |
False claim: State Rep. Matthew Maddock, R-Milford, is receiving backlash after he posted a photo of three buses on a tarmac at Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport on Wednesday night, claiming they were "illegal invaders." The passengers on the bus were actually teams competing in the NCAA men’s basketball tournament. Opening Day: Tarik Skubal pitched six shutout innings and Javier Baez helped manufacture the game’s only run as the Detroit Tigers beat the Chicago White Sox 1-0 Thursday on a sunny Opening Day at Guaranteed Rate Field. For the first time since the 2007-08 NBA season, the Detroit Pistons have a connection to an over-the-air broadcast carrier. On Thursday, the franchise announced its partnership with Scripps Sports to broadcast five of their remaining games over-the-air on TV-20 Detroit (WMYD). |
