With Thanksgiving next week, some community leaders in Genesee County are giving back. Here’s a look at local giveaways taking place ahead of Thanksgiving. Speaking of fall holidays, there's still time to name the turkey Gov. Whitmer will pardon this Thanksgiving. Act fast—the contest ends Friday, Nov. 17 at noon. |

As firearm season begins, see where Michigan bow hunters killed the most deer so far |
Looking at the numbers: Although Wednesday marked the beginning of Michigan's firearm deer season, bow hunters have been in the woods for weeks. See which counties had the highest and lowest deer kills during early bow-hunting season. On the lookout: Michigan deer hunters in Ogemaw County are being asked to keep an eye out for anything out of the ordinary as several tips have indicated that Kelly McWhirter’s body could be buried in the area. Rescue call: Just a few hours into the opening day of firearm season for deer hunting, police and U.S. Coast Guard personnel in central Michigan had to rescue a hunter who fell from his tree stand. |

‘Take care of each other,’ says father of WMU student who died at frat house |
Remembering Jimmy: James “Jimmy” Wettlaufer, 19, a sophomore finance student at Western Michigan University, had a bright future ahead of him. His life was cut short Saturday, Sept. 30, after binge drinking alcohol. At his son's funeral, Jimmy's father told the fraternity brothers to "take care of each other," and "if if it doesn’t look right, say something to somebody." Pirate Mike: University of Michigan sports management professor Michal Lorenc, affectionately called "Pirate Mike" for his eye patch, hails from Lublin, Poland, a little more than 100 miles from the Ukrainian border. When the war with Russia started in February 2022, Lorenc wanted to help in any way he could—including bringing the joy of soccer to displaced children. Also in education: Grand Rapids Public Schools is considering the closure of 10 elementary and middle school buildings across the city. See which schools could be on the chopping block. |

Weather change coming around Thanksgiving, but don’t worry yet |
Getting chilly: The latest extended forecasts show we will start to feel a touch like winter right about Thanksgiving. Colder than normal temperatures are expected to move in around Wednesday evening, just before Thanksgiving. Temperatures look to stay colder than normal through the holiday weekend. Coming to an end: The pleasant weather we’ve been having is going to end rather abruptly as we round out the week. A cold front is expected to swing through the Great Lakes region on Thursday, causing strong winds and rain in some areas during the afternoon and overnight hours. Also in the Great Lakes states: A magnitude 3.6 earthquake rattled northern Illinois and parts of three other states early Wednesday, awakening some residents and spurring reports to 911 about homes shaking, the U.S. Geological Survey and police said. |

Why a win over Maryland would have extra meaning for Michigan football |
Keeping score: Michigan is currently the winningest college football team and could become the first college football program to reach 1,000 wins Saturday if they defeat Maryland. A win would also keep the Wolverines' 2023 undefeated season alive heading into the regular-season finale against Ohio State. Speaking of football: The Detroit Lions have tweaked their roster, signing long snapper Jake McQuaide to the 53-man roster and veteran pass rusher Bruce Irvin to their practice squad heading into Sunday’s game against the Chicago Bears. Reflections: Before the Pistons' Tuesday night loss to the Hawks, the "Human Highlight Film" Dominique Wilkins extended significant praise to a duo of Pistons players. See fireworks, tree lighting outside Michigan Capitol on Friday |
In Lansing: The Michigan state Christmas tree will light up Friday night from 5-9 p.m. as fireworks shoot above the Capitol dome during Lansing’s annual Silver Bells in the City celebration. Fun for all: In an effort to make its annual Christmas parade more inclusive and enjoyable for all families wishing to attend, the 2023 Midland Santa Parade will feature a designated “sensory block” without loud noises and bright lights. Grabbing tickets : Before it closes for the season this weekend, Grand Rapids’ zoo is offering a 50% discount on admission. The zoo will close on Sunday, Nov. 19, and then will reopen in the spring on March 22, 2024. |
