Former Gov. Rick Snyder and others facing charges related to the Flint water crisis Former Gov. Rick Snyder and others have been told they’re being charged for crimes related to the Flint water crisis. Snyder, was governor at the time, appointed a series of emergency financial managers who ran Flint government before and during the water crisis. He has previously apologized for state government’s role in the emergency. An attorney for Snyder says Flint water crisis prosecutors have refused to share information with him about pending criminal charges tied to the Flint water crisis and says prosecutors are engaged in a “smear campaign” against the former governor. Snyder isn't the only one being charged in connection to the crisis. Some Republicans don't think the Michigan State Capitol Commission has the legal authority to enact the ban. Meanwhile, the prevailing sentiment among Democrats is that the ban doesn’t nearly go far enough, and is just one step on a path that should lead to a full firearms ban inside the Capitol building. Gretchen Whitmer is expected to announce an extension to Michigan’s partial shutdown at a news conference Wednesday afternoon, according to multiple Michigan business leaders. Michigan’s latest shutdown expires at 11:59 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 15 and includes a prohibition on in-person dining inside restaurants. The COVID-19 order started Nov. 18 and has been extended multiple times. The reopening of indoor dining could be slated for Feb. 1, according to the Michigan Licensed Beverage Association, which has been in talks with the governor’s office. MORE A state prison located in Saginaw County is in the midst of a COVID-19 outbreak, with more than half of the inmates there testing positive. Michigan Department of Corrections spokesman Chris Gautz said that as of Monday there are 774 inmates at Saginaw Correctional Facility who are positive for the coronavirus. The facility has 1,387 inmates. There are more than 300 additional prisoners who are in step-down phase, meaning they have been medically cleared by the MDOC’s chief medical officer, are symptom free and are no longer considered contagious.
