In today's newsletter, Michigan's "cannibal killer" is sentenced to life in prison, a dangerous flash freeze is possible next week and why you should listen to our Lions podcast, Dungeon of Doom.

It looks like a lake effect weekend for Michigan.

If you've been an MLive reader for a while now, you know Mark Torregrossa likes to provide us all with a weekend forecast each week so we can make our plans (or change them). We have more weather content below, but I thought I'd start with a warning that you might need your shovel.
According to Mark, the weather will start to turn wintery this afternoon and last all weekend. Depending on where you are, you could get slammed with the lake effect snow, or you could have a lovely dusting. Find out all about the forecast right here.
If you don't yet have plans for the weekend and the snow isn't convincing you to stay inside, we have some events to check out. For instance, in Grand Rapids, you can decorate cookies with Santa. In Ann Arbor, you can learn all about the Boblo boats. No matter what you do, I hope you have a grand time.

Gov. Whitmer has her eye on tax issues as priorities for the first months of 2023.

Looking ahead to the new year:Expanding the Earned Income Tax Credit and repealing taxes on retirees’ pensions might end up being two of the first things tackled in the first six months of 2023, if Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has anything to say about it.

The focus for Michigan Democrats: A quartet of bills that weren't taken up this calendar year aim to invest roughly $1.65 billion into a plan which would – according to its sponsors – ensure more affordable and low-income housing is built across the state to better meet demand.

Michigan's proposal recount: So far, the results have changed very, very little. But where election officials say they’ve seen the accuracy of Michigan’s midterm election upheld, the group behind the recount says it’s seen evidence of misconduct.

The Michigan man dubbed the 'cannibal killer' is sentenced to life in prison without parole.

Mark Latunski sentenced: The man who killed and dismembered 25-year-old Kevin Bacon of Swartz Creek nearly three years ago in Shiawassee County will spend the rest of his life behind bars.

'Our world is now shattered:' During the sentencing, messages from Bacon's family members were read aloud. The messages covered some of the same topics: Kevin was outgoing. He was sweet. He loved cats, dogs, Coach purses and Harry Potter. He had a beautiful smile and generous heart. He loved music and cared for others.

In other courts news: A trio of Jackson County men will spend years behind bars on charges stemming from a plot to kidnap Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.

A dangerous flash freeze is highly possible as an Arctic front passes through Michigan next week.

A holiday warning: MLive Chief Meteorologist Mark Torregrossa wants to give you a heads up for next week. A drastic temperature drop in a short time period next week could produce a flash freeze somewhere in the middle U.S. It could create dangerous traveling conditions during the week of Christmas.
