Michiganders mostly have to mask up, but here are 9 exceptions You can now be fined up to $500 for failing to wear a mask in indoor public spaces, as well as in some outdoor situations. But, like most things in life, there are exceptions to the rule. It is likely you are familiar with the dining exception, since it would be tough to eat while wearing a face covering. That's not the only exception to Gov. Gretchen Whitmer's new mask order, though. There are eight other exceptions. Still, the vast majority of people are required to wear a mask in public places or potentially face a misdemeanor. A reminder to businesses as well -- today is the first day businesses can be penalized for failing to enforce the mask rule with customers.
