For many Tiger players from Latin America, it's D.R. before The D
When Al Avila took over as general manager of the Detroit Tigers in 2015, he put a premium on developing talented youngsters from Latin America. The Dominican Summer League is where most of these hopefuls get their first real shot at earning a promotion stateside. MLive Tigers beat reporter Evan Woodbery traveled this past winter to Hispaniola - the Caribbean island shared by the Dominican Republic and Haiti. He toured the Tigers' training facility. He dusted off his Spanish to talk baseball with the locals. He played the role of tourist, and came back with some helpful tips for traveling to the D.R. The likelihood that one of these teenage prospects eventually plays for the big club in Detroit is slim. But the spirit of the game is alive and well, as the players foster dreams of playing under the bright lights of a Major League ballpark. MORE

These are the ballot initiatives voters might see in November

Michigan voters could be facing a rather lengthy ballot come election day in November. The proposal to legalize recreational marijuana will be on the ballot. However, a number of initiatives are up for review by the Board of State Canvassers, including proposals to increase the minimum wage, create paid sick time, and promote voting. The initiative for independent redistricting was ordered on the ballot by the Michigan Court of Appeals, but the U.S. Supreme Court is expected to weigh in on the matter this week. MORE

Engler reverses course with choice for MSU athletic director

Michigan State University interim president John Engler said on numerous occasions the past few months that there would be a "nationwide search" to hire MSU's next athletic director. The former Michigan governor officially disregarded those public statements with Monday's announcement of Bill Beekman as the university's 19th AD. Engler said the need for a national search became "unnecessary" after deciding Beekman had all the qualities he was looking for. Beekman, who has little athletic experience, was named interim athletic director in February. The Michigan State graduate has been an administrator with the university since 1995. MORE
