Morning Briefing

FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 9, 2024

In today's newsletter, Michigan sets climate action priorities, 9 accused of 2021 hazing death and 12 Northern Michigan spots with delicious bites and sips.

Reflecting on some wild weather

January was very warm across northern Lower Michigan and the eastern Upper Peninsula. This means it probably wasn’t really snowy right? That was not the case for some of Northern Michigan.

Even West Michigan was all over the place. January 2024 was the tenth-warmest January on record in Muskegon but Grand Rapids and Lansing had its snowiest January in 10 years.

Now lets look ahead, today will bring a surge of record warmth into Michigan. While most of us will feel temperatures well into the 50s, some cities get to crack the 60-degree mark.

This small Michigan city has the state’s best-tasting water. Where does it stack up nationally?

Winner, winner: Chelsea has the best-tasting water in the state, at least among entrants in an annual contest from the Michigan Rural Water Association that evaluates qualities like clarity, aroma and taste.

The statewide honors gave Chelsea a chance to make it big, competing with water systems serving small communities across the nation in the 2024 Great American Water Taste Test.

Speaking of the best: If you seek a degree but need to do it remotely, a number of Michigan universities and colleges offer online programs recognized in this year’s U.S. News and World Report rankings.

Solar fields, EVs and more recycling; Michigan sets climate action priorities

Michigan environmental regulators wrote a checklist of efforts that can quickly build the state’s climate action track record and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The state Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) wants public feedback on its draft priority climate action plan, which is required for future grant dollars from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Overarching goals are to clean the electric grid, electrify vehicles and bolster public transit, repair homes and their energy efficiencies, and develop new ways to decarbonize the economy.

The U.S. Department of Defense is expanding a PFAS cleanup strategy developed in northern Michigan to other polluted bases around the country.

Sixth time’s the charm?: Michigan is the only state in the nation whose governor is exempt from Freedom of Information Act requests, and only one of two states that doesn’t subject lawmakers to the procedure either. But it’s high time that changes, according two state senators who say Michigan needs to not just move out of last place for transparency but become a nationwide leader on the topic.

An update: Nine people have been charged with hazing resulting in death after a fraternity pledge died in 2021 of alcohol intoxication. Two of the defendants have been awaiting trial since their arrests in 2022. Seven others were recently charged in the death of Phat Nguyen, 21.

More in crime: The mother of a Michigan school shooter is the first parent in the U.S. to be found criminally responsible for a mass school attack conducted by their child, even though she didn't pull the trigger. Here's what’s next for Jennifer and James Crumbley.

Back home: A police dog was released from a Kalamazoo hospital after losing a significant amount of blood following an attack by a man with a knife. The dog was stabbed in the jugular vein and suffered an estimated 40% blood loss, police said.
