July 2, 2020 Holidays are different since the coronavirus popped up. The Independence Day holiday will see some major changes this year because of COVID-19. Many cities and organizations have canceled fireworks displays. Festivals, fairs and concerts are off the table. Some Michiganders will likely want to bring some normalcy to the Fourth of July by grilling, heading to the beach and enjoying other traditional summer activities with family and friends. You might wonder how you can celebrate safely in the time of COVID-19. We talked to experts and got advice on how to mark the holiday while staying safe and healthy. Perhaps the most notable of the changes would be masks required for students in grades 6 and higher at all times, with an exception made for when students are eating. Younger students would also need masks in certain scenarios, such as on a bus. The "Return to School Roadmap," released earlier this week, also strongly recommends smaller class sizes with students spaced out. This summer is already off to a very summery start. While most cities don't record sunshine, luckily Grand Rapids does. It is the reason we know this very specific information: The city of Grand Rapids saw 22,635 minutes of sunshine last month. Need a comparison? Michigan's second largest city snuck in only 1,988 minutes of sunshine in all of January 2020. So, yeah, June was one sunny month, for sure. Major League Baseball announced this week that it would not send players to its minor league affiliates, a move that was expected and one that officially ended the 2020 Minor League Baseball season.
